We wish we were exaggerating.
It’s everywhere we look — in our friendship groups. All over social media. In the thousands of DMs we get from women. In the stories we hear while getting our hair done.
Does anyone else find this extremely alarming?
Is anyone else thinking that something must be deeply wrong here?
Infertility struggles have become so common recently that they’ve been accepted as normal. Expected and inevitable, even. That’s something we cannot stand for. This is truly the sh*t that keeps us up at night.
Let us be clear: we are in no way saying women are at fault, intentionally making poor decisions, or that they’re broken on some level. Everyone is doing the best they can and there is no room for judgement here. (Seriously, we see you!)
Let us cook.
We don’t believe women suddenly become infertile at 32.
We do believe that many women are led down a series of wrong turns starting as young as 13 years old.
Imagine this: You’re driving somewhere you’ve dreamed about your whole life. At every new fork in the road, you take the turn that you think is leading you to the place you want to go. Twenty years later, you look up and realize you’re HUNDREDS of miles away from where you wanted to end up, low on gas, and with spotty GPS service. You’re so lost, tired, and feeling hopeless. You’d do anything to find a short cut back.
Women were never encouraged to truly understand their cycle & fertility biomarkers, or provided the practical tools to support them.
We all briefly learned about ovulation in that one health class but none of us remember it nor did we really care??? It didn’t feel important at the time. Imagine if the teachers made the material sCaRy like they did with the D.A.R.E. stuff? That would have worked…. “Listen up. Or one day you'll be 32 and you'll have wished you had paid attention to this lesson. Your cycle is one of the CLEAREST windows into your overall health. You need to start caring — starting today.” LOL.
But seriously, a regular ovulatory cycle influences a hella lot more than reproduction. It reflects the status of a woman’s hormones & metabolism, and deeply impacts her bone, brain, and heart health. Kind of important.
Unfortunately though, women were never taught to nurture their cycle at every stage (with diet, exercise, daily habits, etc.) and protect it like it’s her social security number, whether or not kids are in her life plan.
Because fertility is not something you only care about when you want a baby... it should matter from the moment your menstrual cycle kicks in at menarche. Literally.
The modern woman is already depleted at BASELINE.
Our modern world is a totally different animal compared to our what our ancestors experienced.
While things are more convenient than ever, today’s chaotic lifestyle is completely unsupportive of women’s health. The rushing, the doom scrolling, the skipping meals, the girl bossing, the skinnytok, the numbing, the over/under exercising, the constant stress, the surface-level... everything. Not to mention our twisted food system or the thousands of chemicals in our personal care products, covering our food, sprayed into our skies, and tainting our water supply.
Needless to say that the norm for a woman is that she’s undernourished, inflamed, burnt out, disconnected, and carrying more stress and toxic load than any generation before her. We’ve completely normalized functioning in survival mode. That’s just a recipe for disaster — you think a woman’s body is going to feel safe enough to have a baby after all of this?
The unfortunate truth is that we have to do extra work now just to get to the baseline of health. And so much of that is in OUR control! We just have to actually CARE… and we have to be super proactive and intentional with our choices.
When something inevitably goes wrong with her fertility journey, the modern roadmap manages the problem, instead of fixing it.
The conventional approach to fertility doesn’t ask WHY. Instead, it says “just take THIS route instead” and it hands her a band-aid solution — hormonal birth control to mask the symptoms, Metformin for blood sugar issues, IVF to skip over fertility struggles, etc. — instead of ever addressing WHAT she was dealing with in the first place.
Does anyone else realize how ass backwards this model is?!!
We feel like we’re living in a black mirror episode. Except it’s NOT funny in the slightest. It’s actually happening to women around us every single day.
Before we jump in, please know that this is all written with 100% compassion and zero judgement. We’ve lived some of these moments, JUST LIKE YOU.
Alaina & Carly were on birth control for a decade and had serious cycle issues before and after. Alaina was diagnosed with PCOS at 17 and convinced she would need medication to conceive one day. Carly almost had ovarian failure and was encouraged to go back on the pill. Julie witnessed first hand what happens through the IVF system as she went through the process to conceive her daughter for genetic reasons.
We are thankful for our struggles because they showed us that there is a better way.
To the doctors doing the work: researching, listening to women, questioning the system (maybe even stepping outside of it), we see you and we’re so grateful for you. For example, shout out to docs like Natalie Crawford MD. We know there are incredible providers in this space.
To the women who needed to do IVF, or feel like they hit every wrong turn on this road: nothing here is meant to make you feel like you failed. It’s meant to make you feel SEEN. None of us were ever taught this information! Which is why it’s our life’s work now. We’re sharing this so the next generation of women gets a different reality, one where they don’t have to suffer, forced into interventions, and can just thrive.
So, let’s start at the top.
(And remember, at every wrong turn, there is an opportunity to find a better road!)
