Your "High Cholesterol" Number Is Lying to You

Hey, so glad you’re here. Grab a coffee; this one’s worth a few minutes.

Let me start with a bit of trivia that still stops me in my tracks: what was the single most prescribed medication in America in 2025?

Not a painkiller. Not a blood pressure pill. It was a statin, atorvastatin, to be exact, filled more than 115 million times a year and sitting at #1 in the country since 2018. The most common thing a doctor hands out in this country is a drug to lower your cholesterol.

Which means one of a few things is probably true for you right now. Maybe you’re on one. Maybe you’ve been offered one and are quietly on the fence. And if neither of those is you , I’d bet money someone you love is taking one, probably without ever being told what the number on their lab report actually means.

Recently I shared a post on LinkedIn about a client of mine, a man whose LDL was "excellent," whose cardiologist kept congratulating him, and who had still just had his second stroke. It hit a nerve. My inbox hasn't been the same since, so I promised I'd write the full version.

First, the important part: I’m not a doctor, and I’m not here to tell you to take anything or quit anything. That’s a conversation for you and your physician. What I am here to do is hand you the map, because the one thing that’s always yours, no permission slip required, is understanding your own body. Nobody gets to opt out of that on your behalf.

Here’s what got me hooked on this topic in the first place. Most people walk out of a physical clutching a single number “your LDL is high” and that’s the whole story. The headline, the fear, the prescription pad. But go past the pamphlet into the actual research and something starts to nag at you: the story we tell about cholesterol is way simpler than the biology. And simple stories about complicated systems tend to be wrong in expensive ways.

So let’s do the thing nobody has time for in a 15-minute appointment. Let’s slow down and look under the hood:,what cholesterol actually is, why one lonely LDL value is such a blunt instrument, and what the science keeps pointing to instead. By the end, you’ll read your own bloodwork like someone who knows what they’re looking at.

This is exactly the work I do inside The GoFast Method, helping professionals decode their labs and rebuild their metabolic health without guesswork. If you want your own numbers looked at properly,

book a free 20-minute call and find out how the program works (Not medical advice — always loop in your own clinician)

Here’s the fact that reframes everything. Your body manufactures roughly 80% of the cholesterol in your blood. You don’t eat your way to most of it; you build it, deliberately, every single day.

Why would evolution do that with a “toxin”? It wouldn’t. Cholesterol is structural. It’s in every cell membrane you own. It’s the raw material for your steroid hormones , testosterone, estrogen, cortisol. It’s the backbone of the vitamin D your skin makes from sunlight, and of the bile acids you need to digest fat. And your brain, about 2% of your body weight, holds around a quarter of your body’s cholesterol. Neurons literally can’t fire without it.

A substance this essential is not something the body treats as garbage to be minimized. So why does a lab value make us panic?
