1st February 2026

Of course, I skipped a few weeks of Signals. She’s a mamacita!

Brands didn’t stop chasing vibes, AI stays hallucinating, still lots of beige thought leadership content everywhere. Is it me? Am I the problem?

So here is this week’s batch.
A bit pent-up, since I have been quiet.

Signal 1. Social search eats Google’s lunch

Do young people “head to Google first”? Of course not.
They head to TikTok, YouTube, Instagram, Pinterest.

• Nearly one third of consumers start search on social, more than half of Gen Z in that group
• TikTok, Instagram, YouTube, Pinterest already function as default search engines for product research, tutorials, reviews

I am seeing more briefs that still chase reach while answers live elsewhere.
2026 belongs to brands that treat “answer presence” as a media line, not a SEO footnote.

Signal for you
Design content that appears in search bars inside social, chat, and voice.
If people type questions and receive someone else, you are optional.

Signal 2. Teens build emotional muscle memory with AI friends

Three in four teens in the US have used AI companions, more than half use them regularly

AI buddies now act as practice partners for flirting, venting, and crisis dumping.
If you want to get into my thoughts about → synthetic intimacy ←.
Now the teen numbers arrive to match the story.

• Around one in ten teens label an AI companion as a friend or best friend
• Researchers already warn that kids start to see AI as superior to human contact

Signal for you
Any youth brand that speaks about “community” now competes with code that listens 24/7 and never rolls its eyes. Your human touch needs a lot more than vibes now.

Signal 3. Vintage turns from virtue signal to cultural flex

Gen Z now treats vintage as status armour rather than only sustainability play.
Rare archive pieces act as proof of taste and cultural memory

At the same time, Y2K and early 2010s fashion refuses to leave.
Wedge sneakers (ew) return, 2000s activewear resurfaces in gyms and street style

Can brands please stop shouting “sustainable capsule” while young people chase story, rarity, and flex instead.

Signal for you
Treat archive, resale, and reference as core brand tools.
Drop-in nostalgia without depth reads lazy. Access to genuine history feels premium.

Signal 4: Community budgets quietly move from top-of-funnel to plumbing

Reports on 2026 social trends talk about chaos culture, AI content, snowballing.
The part I care about is in smaller rooms.

More users search inside Discords, broadcast channels, group chats, subscriber feeds.
Social search reports highlight this shift to closed but searchable spaces

I am hearing more of:

• Brands funding private circles with high signal conversation
• Community teams feeding insight directly into product and creative
• Public feeds acting as recruitment funnels into those inner rooms

Signal for you
Design community as infrastructure.
If meaningful conversation lives where your dashboards barely reach, measurement frameworks need an update.

Signal 5: Reputation as a ranking signal stops feeling theoretical

Search, social, and answer engines learn from three layers.

Human perception.
Reviews, Reddit threads, stitches, Substack essays.

Machine perception.
Structured data, consistent names, clean authorship, verified graphs.

Internal perception.
Staff stories on Glassdoor, LinkedIn, anonymous forums.

I covered this stack in Ep 1 of the Culture Brief.

AI summarises all three. Then it writes the card that people read instead of your site.

Signal for you
Treat reputation work as performance marketing.
Every touchpoint feeds a model that eventually answers the customer’s question.
Those answers guide money.

If you want next week’s Signals closer to a specific theme, tell me which corner of culture or marketing you want me to bully first.
