“If it’s warm and has good butter on it, then there’s like literally nothing I’d rather eat,” Aaron Quint, owner of Kingston Bread + Bar.
The baguette taste test was attended by a small group of guests in a Midtown home, hosted by a service industry couple, the Hitchcocks: Josie and Leopold. More than foodies, the Hitchcocks are wildcatting gourmands. They actively pursue the possibilities of le bon goût, the good taste, whenever and wherever the opportunity presents itself.
At home, they’ve got a smoker. A grill. A pizza oven. A flamethrower.
The Hitchcocks are dressed spectacularly for the occasion — Josie accessorizing with a sunhat and cravat of some light and silky fabric, Leopold besuited in floral print and, to prevent his beard from catching fire, smoking cigarettes with a faux-ivory filter. They allow me to record their participation only in words.
“Let the reader see us in their minds,” Josie cackles.
In the antlers of the dining table centerpiece, a deer skull, Leopold arranges three rustic-looking baguettes, each foraged in Kingston, their provenance concealed to all before the tasting begins, identified only by number.
