Gavin called at noon and asked me to come in for a formal chat, which was police-speak for “we have questions and you’re going to answer them in a room with a recorder running.” I knew this because it wasn’t my first rodeo, and also because my lawyer, Topher Wickhard, told me so when I called him from the car.
“Don’t say anything without me present,” Topher said, in the calm, measured tone of a man who had seen me in enough trouble to have developed a system. “I’ll meet you there in twenty minutes. If you get there first, wait for me.”
“Is that bad?”
“It’s precautionary. You did threaten to kill her in front of witnesses, Tori.”
“I didn’t mean it literally. Besides, she was already dead before I threatened her.”
“I know that. Gavin knows that. But it needs to be on the record that you know that.” A pause. “Don’t touch anything in the station. Don’t accept their offer of coffee because that’s how they get your DNA. Don’t make jokes or reference any Disney movies.”
“That’s very specific advice, and who says I’d reference Disney movies?” I flexed my hands around the steering wheel.
Topher laughed on the other end of the line. “You think I’m the only one who’s heard you refer to Gavin as Gaston from Beauty and the Beast?”
“If the character profile fits.”
“Right. See you in twenty.”
I went home first and found Rune in the kitchen. He handed me a mug of coffee, prepared just how I like it and then made one for himself.
We took our coffee in the living room, where his gaming controller was on the coffee table. “Needed a break from your game?”
“Aye, lass. The next level is the big boss fight. Coffee helps me focus.” Rune grinned.
“That’s awesome. Have you talked to Gavin today?”
His grin disappeared. “Nae. Why do ye ask? What’s wrong?”
“Why would you think something’s wrong?” I sipped my coffee.
