You could’ve picked anywhere to spend your reading time, but you landed in my sweet and cozy world where the only steamy thing you’ll find in here is the coffee.
While talking about families with an author friend recently, she asked if I had any siblings. The main characters in my books are usually only children. Peyton in Protecting Peyton has a brother, but he goes missing. Looking over all the books I’ve ever written, I can see why she asked. Half my characters don’t even have parents, which I swear was not intentional.
I’m actually the oldest of four kids. We all grew up in the same middle-class family with two parents in the same home. Was our family perfect? Hardly. Perfect families don’t exist. Even if they look perfect on the outside, something’s happening behind the scenes.
When Taylor Swift released the song Eldest Daughter, a song which “explores themes of honesty, navigating personal growth, and the enduring nature of specific commitments,” according to the YouTube video description, some of the lyrics felt like she knew me.
I didn’t become a Swiftie until after moving to South Carolina a few years ago. Sure, I liked her music. But then she did “Taylor’s Version” of her music when others wouldn’t give up the rights to her songs. And then she started dating Travis Kelce, an NFL player. I’d already started watching NFL games with my husband several years into our marriage. This felt like a win-win-win!
Another thing I love about Taylor Swift is that she uses her music to work out her feelings. Someone broke her heart? They’re going in a song. I can relate. Every victim in my cozy mysteries is based on someone I know in real life. Some of these characters wronged me. Others wronged loved ones.
I’ve put my BFF’s ex in three different books, and the person never made it to the final chapter. I’ve tweaked the names of these people in all books except one—and no, I will not say who it is. Only a few people will know. It’s cathartic and so much cheaper than therapy.
Are you a fan of Taylor Swift’s music? Have you been to one of her concerts? Which of her songs is your favorite? Let’s discuss in the comments!

And here’s a sneak peek!
Less than an hour after the police left the Fluff and Fold, Mom declared we all needed a mental health day starting with a trip to the beauty salon.
“The beauty salon,” I repeated.
“My ends are as split as the mayor’s wife’s too-tight pants when she bent over at the Beach Plum Days festival when you girls were in high school. I’ve been meaning to go since I got here, but between the move and the laundromat and,” she gestured vaguely toward the commercial dryer that recently held Charlene’s corpse, “all of this, I just haven’t had the chance. Besides, if I put it off any longer, my roots are going to reveal my natural hair color.”
Hazel and I exchanged a glance. I looked away to keep from doing that thing where your best friend causes you to laugh during inappropriate moments. “Mom, someone was just found dead in your dryer.”
“I know that, Tori. That’s exactly why I need a haircut. I cannot process what just happened in this building without doing something normal first. That’s how I’m built.” She stood up and smoothed her hands over the sides of her cardigan sweater. “Besides, I made an appointment last week with that new girl at Cute Cuts and Curls, Didi. Have you met her? Everyone in town is talking about her. Ivy at the coffee shop said that she’s part beautician, part magician.”
I had not met her. Rune had walked back to the house to, as he said, work off the carbs from all the donuts he’d eaten for breakfast. Hazel had a Salty Sirens consultation at two. Mom stared at me with the particular expression that meant she had already decided I was coming and there was nothing I could do about it.
After a dramatic exhale, I said, “Fine, but I’m not getting a haircut. My hair is just fine the way it is.”

I finished the ARC of Dora Sage’s very first book, and it might be one of my new favorites. Barnaby the otter is adorable. Also, I kind of want an otter now. Please don’t tell my dogs.
When Lolly Legare wakes up after a decades-long nap, everything has changed except her—and her family is stuck in the Gray Limbo. In order to free them, she’ll have to reopen the family tea shop and brew something strong enough to defeat a rival coven.
With her trusty otter familiar Barnaby at her side and old alliances on standby, can she do what it takes to save her hometown and the surrounding marsh? Or will the other coven win, trapping Lolly and her family in the Gray Limbo for all eternity?
