While doing research for THE FLUFFED AND FOLDED PHANTOM, something sparked a memory I hadn’t thought about in years.
The original Terminator movie released on VHS when I was thirteen. Our family rented a copy from the local video store and watched it that evening after dinner. Mom always made popcorn on the stove for movie nights. We usually had some flavor of Kool-Aid to go with it. Lemon-lime and grape were my favorites.
When the Terminator (aka Arnold Schwarzenegger) traveled from 2029 to 1984 without a stitch of clothing and the punks asked him, “Wash day tomorrow. Nothing clean, right?” no one laughed harder than my dad. He’d quip, “Wash day. Nothing clean!” for years afterward.
It’s funny when you think about it. My books are full of coffee shops, small towns, and talking animals. The Haunted Housekeeping series has a hunky Irishman who spent a couple hundred years living in the body of a black cat, but there’s not a time-traveling robot in any of my books or series.
But at the heart of it, the goal isn’t that different. Writing fiction is about creating moments that stick with characters who readers feel like they know—or would at least want to know—in real life.
Every time I read comments like the ones below in reviews, it inspires me to keep writing.
The mention of heated seats in Hazel's car won't be forgotten.

Chapter 1
The morning Mom officially moved into town, I stood at my kitchen window with a caramel latte in one hand and my engagement ring catching the light in the other. Two men in matching blue shirts wrestled her velvet settee through the front door of what used to be the empty house across the street.
“She’s moving in,” I said to Rune, who was at that moment in his preferred breakfast form, leaning against our counter with his own coffee. “My mother will be living across the street from us.”
“Aye. You’ve mentioned.” He took a sip.
Now the men were unloading what appeared to be an enormous oil painting of a lighthouse.
“She has a lighthouse painting,” I reported. “A lighthouse painting that she paid people to bring here from South Carolina. Who does that?”
“Yer mother, lass.” He set his mug down. “Would ye like me to go and help with the heavy lifting?”
“Absolutely not.” I spun around. “If you go over there, I’ll have to go with you. We’ll be trapped for hours while she tells you about my entire childhood, and then I’ll never get to the laundromat in time.”
Rune blinked. “The laundromat.”
“Yes, my mother’s laundromat, which is where she should be right now. I can’t believe she retired to Cooper’s Cove and bought two properties.” I held up two fingers.
Rune winked at me. “Your mother is an enterprising woman.”
“I love her more than anything on this earth, but I need to leave before she realizes I’m still home.” I grabbed my tote bag from the back of a kitchen chair, pecked Rune on the cheek, and left the house.
But I had barely made it to the porch steps when the door of Mom’s new house swung open, and there she was, waving at me like I was a cruise ship pulling into port.
“Tor-Tor! Come help your mama!” She crossed the street, heels clicking on the asphalt, a floral wrap dress billowing behind her.
I waved back. What else could I do? She’d already spotted me.
