You could’ve picked anywhere to spend your reading time, but I’m honored you landed in my sweet and cozy world. No matter what genre I write, the only thing steamy you’ll find in here is the coffee. Thanks for being here!

Death Doesn’t Drink Decaf is now available! Keep Reading to learn more!

Mysteries have always been one of my favorite genres. As a kid, quickly jumped from Nancy Drew and the Hardy Boys to Agatha Christie and Mary Higgins Clark. It was rare to see me without a book in my hands (and my nose in the book).

Several years ago, my friend Julie Main told me that the true crime program Cold Justice had filmed an episode near where we lived. The episode focused on a missing person, which harkened to some of my favorite Unsolved Mysteries episodes. I’ve since watched untold hours of true crime dramas and even co-hosted a true crime podcast for a couple of years.

But the only thing that beats the joy of writing is when someone like you tells me how much they enjoyed reading the books. Someone recently asked me why I prefer writing mysteries. After some thought, I’ve come up with a few reasons:

  1. Writing mysteries is a way to combine many things into one book.
I grew up watching shows like Alfred Hitchcock, I Love Lucy, Bewitched, the Twilight Zone, I Dream of Jeannie, and so many others. I love including elements of magic and humor to create fun cozy escapes for my fellow bookworms, and mixing them up keeps the plots from feeling stale.

  2. Writing mysteries allows me to explore a range of contrasts.
Just like a delicious latte that starts out sweet then gives you a jolt of caffeinated energy, cozies start out with small towns filled with quirky characters. Then BOOM! The crime happens. Sometimes it’s the character you suspected from the start. And sometimes, it’s the villain you never saw coming.

  3. Writing mysteries gives me control.
In a world where so much of real life doesn’t make sense, I love building little worlds where the clues line up and everyday people can give back to their community by solving the crime. When I watch true crime shows, for example, hearing about injustice finds me yelling protests at the television. But in my books, the villain always gets what’s coming to them.

If I wrote straight mystery, straight romance, or straight any other genre, I’d lose the balance and get stuck in a rut. I admire authors who can stay in their lane, but this is why I also dip my toe in the romance pool now and then. (Ack! Don’t tell my cozies that I’m cheating on them with Catching Callie, which will release in August!)

Nobody wants Death on their doorstep. Ask me how I know.

I’m Danica Death, and as the local tax collector, the only thing I bring to the residents of Palmetto Holler is grief, and possibly a follow-up to unpaid property taxes. I’m used to the cold shoulders and the iced tea that never gets offered. It’s their loss, because I’m fabulous. Just ask Tempest, my opinionated crow.

When a dead man leaves behind a property full of secrets that’s valued higher than it should be, I follow the paper trail straight into a missing persons case that someone very much wants to stay cold.

Between my estranged husband walking back into my life and someone firing literal warning shots in my direction, I’m starting to think this situation holds more danger than a delinquent tax bill.

But I’ve got grit, enough caffeine in my system to show up on a DNA test, and a gossiping crow looking over my shoulder. Now I just have to make sure the end of this mystery doesn’t find me six feet under in the local graveyard.

Paranormal cozy mysteries are similar to traditional mysteries, except they have enchanting elements such as talking cats and witchy sleuths.
