In 1914, the most celebrated mind of the twentieth century handed his wife a list of conditions.

She would serve three meals a day in his room. Keep his clothes in order. Stop talking when he demanded it. Expect nothing resembling affection.

She was a physicist. She passed the same coursework he did. His own letters said “our work.”

History remembers him as a genius. Tuesday, we look at what the record actually says about the woman who signed her name away — until they were, in every sense, one stone.
