This is a short follow up to yesterday’s post about Vučić and Serbia’s complicated geopolitical position.
I know many people despise Vučić and are quick to criticize his every move. And I see lots of talk about what he or Serbia shouldn’t do but far less about what they should do.
At this late stage does continuing to pursue EU membership make sense? The EU is close by and, even in this period of decline, still immensely richer than Serbia. But for how long?
Closer ties to Russia? Russia is far away and geographically limited in what it can do for Serbia, and is obviously busy with its own problems.
Be a sovereign independent state not tied to anyone? Even Switzerland is foregoing neutrality. And Serbia has a population of only 6.5 million and is a little over 80,000 sq kms, landlocked to boot. For comparison, Iran is 20X bigger, with 15X the population, is geographically practically impregnable, and has immense oil wealth. Yet Iran suffers mightily for its sovereignty.
Try to create some sort of eastern European association (whatever that means...) of like minded states? It is hard to see how the others would commit to anything other than "dialogue" and perhaps a political communique or two. Anything meaningful would take decades and probably requires the collapse of the EU.
And Kosovo? The EU and NATO will never agree to its return to Serbia or admit their lies and duplicity.
So, I am curious what people think Serbia should do.
Not allow its arms to be sold to Ukraine. Fine. Agreed.
Not continue sucking up to the EU. Sure.
But those are things it shouldn’t do.
What should it do? What path should it take?
