Arvin Goods · The Clean Up

Happy Sunday,

We haven’t been around for a few weeks. Recently, we’ve been in Paris, Portugal, the UK, and Chicago. All to hustle some socks.

Paris was a wild experience. During Fashion Week, there’s a marketplace happening all over the city. Every brand you can think of, big or small, sets up a showroom to showcase upcoming seasons. We’re fortunate to have relationships across the industry, which gave us the chance to meet with sales and product teams from a wide range of brands.

We’ve attended plenty of trade events and marketplaces over the years, but this felt different. Most industry events are centralized, one or two big properties in New York, LA, or Vegas. Think convention centers, large buildings with halls of showrooms, or rows of booths. Paris, on the other hand, was made up of smaller showrooms and converted retail spaces spread throughout the city. It feels like you’re just out and about shopping and eating. And it is truly global: buyers, brands, makers, and marketers from all over the world converged in one place for five days, discussing everything from clothing and sustainability to geopolitics and, of course, socks😉.

What did we learn? It’s a tough market right now, and the US government isn’t making it any easier. That’s not a political statement; it’s a market reality everyone shared. But that pressure hasn’t slowed inspiration or innovation. If anything, it’s accelerated it. People are working smarter, finding more efficient ways to make things, and doing what they can to protect their position and hopefully their margins.

Trips like this are informative, inspiring, exhausting, but most of all, fun. We meet new people, learn new things, and hand out a lot of socks. We make the best socks you can buy, and one thing is very clear: people love socks, and we make a lot of new friends with just a pair.

Be on the lookout for next week’s newsletter. We’re taking you behind the scenes at our factory in Portugal. As always, thank you for reading! Enjoy the news below, and we wish you a great week!

Hope you enjoy today’s Clean Up. We would love to hear from you. Comment here on Substack, hit us on social, or email us at info@arvingoods.com. Have a great week. Cheers,

‘We’ve Tackled a Lot of Low-Hanging Fruit’: What’s Next for Fashion Decarbonization? - Sourcing Journal

As far as Joel Mertens, director of Higg Product Tools at Cascale, is concerned, the era of easy progress in industry-wide decarbonization is over.

“We’ve tackled a lot of the low-hanging fruit,” he said. “We’re at a time where what is needed to drive environmental progress is investment.”

But stop us if you’ve heard this one: Fashion—meaning apparel, footwear and textiles—isn’t doing nearly enough or moving fast enough to meet global climate targets. In fact, it’s doing the opposite: heading further off course from the carbon reduction trajectory necessary to limit global warming to 1.5 degrees Celsius because marginal improvements to material selections and production processes cannot keep pace with the increasing volume churn.

Verified environmental data gleaned from seven of the largest production countries shows that the lion’s share of greenhouse gas emissions from apparel and footwear manufacturing comes from energy, yet coal consumption has remained stubbornly unchanged from 2023 to 2024, the multi-stakeholder organization formerly known as the Sustainable Apparel Coalition said in a new “state of the industry” report. In Tier 2 facilities that create and process textiles, coal accounts for 40 percent of the total energy use. And though a growing number of establishments are adopting renewable energy in most countries, these green alternatives never make up more than 4 percent of the total energy mix in either the first or second tiers.💸🏬
