This is just a very quick update exclusive to our Substack subscribers. Mary Lou is now off the lift and sitting on its tires for the first time in several months. The headlights were looking rough, so I polished them before reinstallation, and I think this vehicle looks really good for an 18-year-old machine with 205,000 miles on it!
I’m still awaiting parts to finish things and start the engine, but it’s getting very close to completion.
Vehicle Information, Including Modifications:
2008 ML320 CDI (not a great name, so I named it “Mary Lou”) with 205,000 miles
A lower-mileage OM642-940 engine
722.9 7-speed transmission (stock)
Black Smoke Racing hybrid turbo
Turbo silencer innards replaced with a straight tube for straight-through flow with no restrictions, printed here in carbon-filled polycarbonate, I’m sharing the file on Thingiverse: https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:7268644
Stock intercooler
EGR delete, including removal of the input tube / mixer from the flow path in the intake elbow
Swirl vanes deleted (47 kOhm resistor installed), tapped and plugged with 1/8 NPT brass plugs
Stock exhaust, but with certain blockages removed, including the use of this this straight pipe
I’m trying something different for boost / egr measurement, this dual gauge from Auber Instruments with white displays. Here’s my first-draft 3D print of the pod in PLA. I’ll put this on Thingiverse when the model is finalized.
My previous tune was done by Green Diesel Engineering when they used to work these. They don’t anymore. My plan is to get a tune from Drew for this.
Anyhow, I just wanted to share a quick update. I’m getting excited to get this machine back on the road again soon!
