Making Light

IncoRporating Electrolite

Language, fraud, folly, truth, knitting, and growing luminous by eating light.

Fiat lux

The door creaks softly as I push it wide.
It’s not complaining, really, just surprised
That anyone would come. I, mesmerized,
Breathe deeply, lift my chin, and step inside.
The house is still ineffably itself.
The places where we talked, or laughed, or wept,
Abide (albeit cobwebbed and unswept).
And written there atop the mantle-shelf:
Say what you mean. Bear witness. Iterate.
Ah. This is why I came. It’s getting dark.
It’s time to light the world up with this spark.
To shine. To make some light. Illuminate.
For what has been, and what is yet to come,
Again the door is open. Welcome home.

  1. Oh Abi– that brought tears to my eyes.

Thank you. And thanks to P&T for unlocking the doors.

  2. Oh, how wonderful!

  3. As the blogs begin to return, it is only right that The Blog return, and not in some diminished newsletter form, but in it’s full glory (eventually).

  4. Back! And gladly back!

  5. Second time’s the charm, I hope. This could be the end of the perfect day.

  6. My optional url is kipwblog.blogspot.com/ even if the system here pooh-poohs its URLity.

    1. Did you include the https:// bit at the start? I just tried it with mine, & it seems to work. (Nevermind that it’s been ≈30 years since I updated anything over there….)

  7. Hi everyone! I brought chocolate chip cookies!

  8. I had the oddest dream. Good morning.

    1. It says 17 comments, but I only count 11.
The man is keeping us down!

      1. I think that’s the total count, including replies, which don’t incrememt the comment count, only ad a sub-count.

        1. LOOK, MA!
          I’M THREADING!!

  9. I still have the site in my “Check Daily” bookmark folder. As a memorial, and just in case.

    1. Me, also. Because…sometimes there’s something new

  10. We huddled in the backs of caves and such
Or so the dioramas tell the youth
With flint on flint, a sharp ungentle touch
A spark, a flame, a metaphor for truth.

Then bows and drills, and coals, and tents for homes
A gentler, more reliable type fire
Then wine, and grain for beer, no more to roam
Museums used this story to inspire.

It never was as linear as that-
to flint and steel and sparks we did return
The Mongols beat the rebel polis flat
And rode off while the fabled cities burned.

    Whale oil, incandescent, LED:
The light goes on, connecting you and me.

The sonnets still come, slower and no better.

    Good to see you all!

    1. Thanks! I like this, and the sentiment.

  11. This Is Just To Say

    I have commented
    the URL
    that was in
    the web log

    and which
    you were certainly
    serving
    for ages

    Forgive me
    it was delicious
    so fresh
    and so old

    and free your plums
I wanna steal some of the icebox ones
    this is just to say

  16. Jacque reminds me by example that I didn’t get my URL put in yet, because I literally forgot how many slashes to use. I don’t even let A.I. do that for me, and I still forgot. Let’s see if I get it right.

  17. Doctor says, “You are depressed. You need to get out of yourself. I have some cold, sweet plums in my fridge, and I am going to share them with you right now.”

“But, Doctor,” says William Carlos Williams

  18. So, guys … any good books to recommend lately?

Nonfic recommendation right now: Leave The Lights On (Elizabeth Dunn, Jiaying Zhao). A happiness researcher found out that if you do a little bit every day for the climate you feel happier and decided to work with a climate scientist to make a list of really good bangs-for-the-buck, and you can find what works for you. If an American lowers their carbon footprint by 10% that’s like a whole developing-world person.

Only-new-to-me: Sorcery and Cecelia (Wrede & Stevemeyer). Absolutely everyone told me it was good and they were right.

Fairly recent: A Half-Built Garden, Ruthanna Emrys. The aliens come to rescue us from our ecologically ruined planet … but we’re like “We’re not done! We can fix it! We’re working on it!” I haven’t heard anyone else talking about it, but I think they should be.

  19. Currently reading Agnes Aubert’s Mystical Cat Shelter. I keep forgetting that I’m reading it, but that’s more a measure of my state of mind than the quality of the book, I think.
