About Uganda

Uganda is a landlocked country in East Africa. It lies within the Nile basin and is in the African Great Lakes region. Its capital and largest city is Kampala. It has lush tropical forests and beautiful lakes. If you cut a tree in Uganda, you are expected to plant three trees as a replacement.

It has a humid tropical climate apart from the mountainous areas which are cooler and often covered with snow. The hottest months are from December to February. It has two dry seasons, between January and February and June to August. There's also a rainy season between March and May and September to November.

Uganda is made up of several ethnic groups. Buganda is the largest, then there is Acholi, Iteso, Langi, Lugbara, Alur, Madi, Karamojong, Europeans and Indians. It is a multilingual country with over 40 languages which include; Rutooro, Runyakoro, Runyoro, Rukiga, Luganda, Bari and Swahili. The official languages are Swahili and English. The culture of Uganda is made up of a diverse range of ethnic groups with European, Arab, and Indian influences. Most Ugandans are Christians but the country has sizeable Muslim, Buddhist, and animist populations. The Kanzu is the national dress of men in the country. Gomesi, Suuka, and Basuti are worn by women. If you are visiting Uganda you are advised to bring light dresses, T-shirts, shorts, tank tops, and skirts because it's humid. But warm clothes should be worn when visiting the mountain ranges.

The Ugandan cuisine is influenced by Arab, English and Asian dishes. Their food is starch-based with meat or Brandon add flavour. Chapati, matooke, posho, malewa, grasshopper dish, kikomando, and samusa are dishes enjoyed in the country.

Being a country with amazing wildlife diversity and beauty, here are the top attractions and things to do in Uganda:

  • Savanna Wildlife Safari in Queen Elizabeth National Park: The Queen Elizabeth national park is the most popular tourist destination in Uganda. It has a protected area filled with forests, lakes, grasslands, wetlands and amazing wildlife. It is located at the western side of Uganda containing animals such as giraffes, lions, elephants, hippopotamus, antelopes, and zebras. You can also visit lakes where you can enjoy cruises and see Nile crocodiles.
  • Hike from Kisoro to Nkutingo and Buhoma: There are many hiking opportunities in the area given the fascinating scenery. The most popular hiking trail is between Buhoma and Kisoro and you can also go gorilla trekking.
  • Visit Murchison Falls: It is an attraction located in the Murchison Falls National Park. It is home to leopards, hippos, birds, lions, giraffes, and chimpanzees. The falls is a spectacle with water crashing through the gorge. Because of the spray of water, rainbows can be seen over the falls and it's an amazing sight.
  • Gorilla Watching in Bwindi National Park: The mountain gorilla tour is another reason to visit Uganda. The mountain gorillas are found only in this region and are perfectly adapted to the weather with thicker fur. They are led by the most powerful silver back and comprise females and younger males. They are also located in the point where the African continent is slowly splitting apart revealing the beautiful lake. The landscape is sometimes compared with that of Switzerland.

Uganda has an abundance of butterflies. It has 6.8% of the world's butterfly species and it also has one if the world's smallest churches on top of Biku hills in Nebbi town. The name of the church is the Bethel church established by Korean pastor Sung and Henry Luke, a retired Archbishop in Uganda.

There are hotels all around Uganda and getting accommodation is quite easy.

Visa rules change often. Always confirm the latest requirements with the official embassy or consulate before you travel.
