About Togo

Togo is a West African country in the Gulf of Guinea bordered by Burkina Faso to the north, the Atlantic Ocean to the south, Benin to the east and Ghana to the west. It is one of the smallest countries in Africa. Its capital city is Lomé.

The climate is generally tropical. There are two seasons of rain in the south. The first between April and July and the second between September and November. The north has a dry climate. The humidity lasts for seven months while the dry desert winds of harmattan bring cool weather. You should bring tank tops, shorts, T-shirts and jeans while visiting.

Despite Togo being colonized by France, it is a mostly pagan country with 51% of the country's population adhering to animism or voodoo. Christians make up 20% of the population and Muslims, 19%. Togo's culture is influenced by its 37 ethnic groups, Germany, and France.

In Togo, there are about 40 ethnic groups and the largest are the Ewe who make up 32% of the population. Other ethnic groups include the Kposo people, Anlo Ewe, Kabye people, Mamprusi people, Tem people, Bissa people, Gurma and the Aja people with a small population of Europeans and other Africans. French is the official language. Ewé, Kabyié, Mobaa, Tem, and Fula are some of the languages spoken in Togo. Many other African languages are spoken as well.

The Togolese cuisine is rich with maize, beans, rice, cassava, plantain, and fish being staple foods. Ablo and maize pudding, baguette bread and fufu with palm nut soup are some of Togo's dishes.

It is a beautiful travel destination with beaches and lots of interesting sights for tourists. Some of these include:

  • Kpalime: A town in the plateau region with German and French colonial relics. It is known for its bazaars and beautiful scenery.
  • Lake Togo: It is located about 45 minutes from Lomé. Take a boat ride on the lake and visit the German cathedrals and museum of the King of Togoville.
  • Akodessewa Fetish Market: It is a voodoo market where you can buy woodcarvings and talk to spiritualists.
  • Lomé Grand marché: The large central market of Lomé is located near Lomé Cathedral. The market occupies an entire city block. You'll find cheap clothes, cosmetics, fresh vegetables, fruits, and food there.

Togo is known for its friendly people, markets, beaches, and nature. It enjoys one of the highest standards of living on the continent despite being one of the poorest.

There is a reasonable number of hotels in Togo.

Visa rules change often. Always confirm the latest requirements with the official embassy or consulate before you travel.
