About Chad

Chad is a landlocked country in North-Central Africa bordered by Sudan, Central African Republic, Cameroon, Nigeria, and Niger. Its capital is N'Djamena. Characteristic of Chad is its harsh, extreme terrain and desert landscapes.

The country has a hot, tropical climate, although the climate varies depending on region. In the south, there is a rainy season that runs from May through to October. In the Centre, there are rains from June through to September. The north experiences very little rain throughout the year. In Chad one should wear airy linens and good waterproof clothing.

The country is ethnically diverse with about 200 groups residing in it. The south is dominated by the Sara people who are predominantly Christian, while the north features Muslim nomadic tribes.

The Chadians are generally friendly and relaxed but expect visitors to be respectful of their customs. For instance, it is disrespectful in Chad to give and receive things with one's left hand. These customs differ with respect to the region. Muslim areas are strictly segregated between men and women and women are expected to dress conservatively.

Chadian cuisine features a variety of grains such as sorghum, millet, rice. Vegetables such as okra and cassava are commonplace.

Navigating the terrain of Chad is not an adventure for the fainthearted in the slightest. The country presents many challenges such as finding hotels, safe roads to travel on, respite from the heat, etc. Nevertheless, the country has ties with nature that appeal to travel-hardened adventurers.

Some tourist locations in Chad are:

  • Zakouma National Park: This park covers roughly 3,000 square kilometres of land. The park boasts several rare species of mammals and birds, and one of the best game viewing experiences in Central Africa.
  • Lake Chad, Baga Sola: The lake Chad is the landmark of Chad. It was once the largest freshwater lake in the world but has taken to continuously drying up in more recent times. Visitors may ride old-fashioned boats along the lake whilst enjoying views of the surrounding forest. All this must be done whilst constantly looking out for crocodiles though.
  • Ennedi Desert: As can be imagined, the terrain here is harsh and difficult to survive in with scorpions, beetles, snakes, and the heat to worry about. However, those who brave the discomfort and dangers to visit the desert (after proper planning) are rewarded with some of the most breathtaking landscapes in the world.
  • Musee National N'Djamena: This is the National Museum in Chad. History lovers can see very important pieces from centuries before. It is bristling with information and data about Chad.

Holidays in Chad include events such as the Proclamation of the Republic (28th of November), Liberation of Africa (May 25th), and Muslim holidays such as Ramadan, Eid-al-Fitr, etc. Chad is the fifth largest country in Africa but has a population density of only about 20 persons for every square mile. It has 4 national parks and 18 other protected areas.

Accommodation in Chad ranges from luxury to standard.

Visa rules change often. Always confirm the latest requirements with the official embassy or consulate before you travel.
