Fall of the Jaguar Sun

In aztec mythology, the sun of the first creation was the jaguar sun. Black Tescatlipoca was chosen to be the sun, but he could only become a half sun.

Jealous of his brother, Quetzalcoatl struck Tezcatlipoca from the sky with a stone club. The blow singed Tezcatlipoca’s fur, giving jaguar their spots.

The world was plunged into darkness and the first creation was destroyed when Tezcatlipoca used his sorcery to have jaguars eat all the people in his vengeance.

Some legends say that Tezcatlipoca lost his leg in the fall, which he replaced with a mirrored obsidian.

Frigga Carrying Thor and Loki, the Twin Heirs of Asgard

I hold each of my sons close, each listening to my heartbeat; one twin pressed to my bared breast, one twin cramped in his too small womb.

Tomorrow the son I carried for nine months will enter this world, and he will meet his brother and his twin; a son I have only known for breath of hours since he was laid in my arms, carried on the dying gasps of winter and war.

They will know each other soon. But first they will know their mother’s heartbeat.

Art based off the theory that Thor and Loki were raised as twins in order to disguise Loki’s true origins. The birth of two such healthy and strong heirs was felt by many in the kingdom to be a fortuitous omen for the new age of fertility, plenty, and peace that would befall Asgard.

(I absolutely adore the idea of Thor and Loki, twins born days apart, being told they are equals in every way and to grow up with this brotherly bond, but still grappling with how different they each are. I also can’t get over the idea of Odin bringing Frigga a crying Loki, only to have Frigga’s body respond by making milk and her fingers grasp in a ‘gimme’ gesture. Once Odin handed Loki over, there was no going back. Loki was stuck with the most tenacious of mothers.)

I finished the Maria Magnusson leaving cowl.

If you look closely at the bottom you’ll see where I misunderstood the pattern. Apparently when it says ‘yarn over, knit thru back, yarn over, knit’ you aren’t meant to treat each stitch separately.

Instead you finish the yarn over by knitting thru the back, and you finish the second yarn over with a knit type stitch (finishing the yarn over with a pearl stitch seemed to make a larger opening tho. Not that it’s very noticeable now…)

I’ve been having some Tezcatlipoca feels, and I’ve been wanting to play with my new brushpen more.

Tezcatlipoca was a shape shifter, and one of the forms he was known to take was that of a disemboweled corpse. If a brave warrior met Tezcatlipoca at the crossroads in one of his many terrifying guises and proved their bravery by reaching in and grasping his heart, he would reveal/grant future good fortune on the warrior. He granted them turkey feathers before he departed - symbolic of how many captives the warrior would capture in future battles.

Whether Tezcatlipoca granted this good fortune, or merely revealed it, is a question that I have found satisfyingly vague in my reserach…
