Red VW Karmann Ghia in a parking lot on a beautiful clear day.

We bought a 1974 Volkswagen Karmann Ghia in 2021 and I've been (slowly) futzing with it ever since.

It came to us in pretty good shape (for the most part), and our intention is to have a fun project car to tinker with and toy around in. It's not going to be a show car by any means. Right now the focus is on making sure all the mechanical bits are sound. Once we're comfortable with how it drives we'll look at getting it painted and refinishing the interior.

My immediate goal is to be able to drive it to work sometimes when the weather is nice.🤞

Posts about the Ghia

Completed major work

  • Replaced busted tie rod ends
  • Replaced worn front brake calipers, pads, rotors, and lines
  • Replaced rear brake shoes
  • Replaced missing heater control boxes
  • Replaced horribly corroded rear axle nut
  • Replaced air intake hose
  • Upgraded SVDA distributor with electronic ignition
  • Replaced clutch
  • Removed deteriorated carpet
  • Corrected brake pedal free play

Stuff that still needs fixing

  • Fuel gauge doesn't work
  • Interior is a bit trash
  • Driver seat cover is busted
  • Engine lid doesn't latch
  • Ignition switch doesn't work ("security" push-button behind passenger seat wired directly to starter)
