A dark grey sports car knocking over a cone as it speeds through a race course.

I've been racing my daily driver (and daily driving my racecar) in autocross events with the Twickenham Auto Club↗ since 2014. Here's my latest run:

Autocross is a motorsports discipline where competitors race against the clock on technical courses defined by traffic cones on asphalt or concrete surfaces1. The course is different at each event, and competitors typically only get around 6 chances to learn the course and put down their fastest time. The difference between first and second place is often thousandths of a second. It's pretty intense.

I started racing in the minimally-prepared "street" classes, but switched to the Solo Spec Coupe↗ class in 2022 where each first-generation BRZ/FR-S/86 runs with (nearly) identical equipment making for even tighter competition. (And I get to lose on my own merits instead of blaming my car for being slow!)

  1. At least in the US. Drivers in the UK and Europe would probably call what we do autoslalom, and we'd call their autocross rallycross↩︎
