James Stark is the magician at the center of Richard Kadrey’s Sandman Slim series. Betrayed by a rival and sent to Hell alive, he survives eleven years in its fighting pits before escaping to Los Angeles under the name Sandman Slim.
The first book follows Stark’s return and his search for revenge. The series then expands his role in Los Angeles, where angels, demons, gods, and human criminals pursue their own interests. Stark uses magic and the fighting skills he learned in Hell, usually with a confrontational sense of humor.
Read the books in order, beginning with Sandman Slim. The novella Devil in the Dollhouse comes after Aloha from Hell and before Devil Said Bang.
