Alice is the young protagonist of Lewis Carroll’s Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland and Through the Looking-Glass. In the first book, she follows the White Rabbit into a dreamlike world where language, rules, and scale keep changing. Her direct questions make her a useful guide to the absurdity around her.
The sequel moves Alice through a looking-glass world arranged like a chessboard. The character was developed from stories Carroll told the Liddell sisters in 1862, then expanded for publication.
