i love finding slight technical inaccuracies in something i’ve written and covertly (and usually sloppily) giving that inaccuracy an out through some convoluted means instead of just correcting it purely to thwart a Type Of Guy i anticipate would comment smugly about it who also does not exist nor could exist since people correctly do not read what i write more closely than they would a children’s book. this quirk is something we italians refer to as La Schizofrenico

(forgot about the puzzling tumblr quirk preventing adding videos to a reblog despite this being the new pdf)

tenths indicator. each tick represents one ten-thousandth of an inch movement on the plunger, and the smaller inset dial measures some even-smaller increment. starrett has two brands, the mainline one is manufactured offshore but this one (starrett USA or something) was made domestically. i’d bet there’s roughly zero difference, one is just marketed to racist blue collar uncle & racist tooling procurement specialist working for the bomb factory with strict regulations on how/where they can buy equipment

you would need this for, fuck, i don’t know, making some kind of fucked up hydraulic cylinder that uses very thin fluid that needs to be precise to a tenth

i have no reasonable explanation for owning this

good article. highlight:

“Due to its complexity, the roller screw is a relatively expensive actuator (as much as an order of magnitude more expensive than ball screws), but may be suitable for high-precision, high-speed, heavy-load, long-life, and heavy-use applications.”

ball screws are already bonkers expensive. precision acme threaded lead screws are just regular expensive. i only ever hear about ball screws being used in modern high-end CNC machines. what insane use case decided ball screws weren’t enough

hi yes i need something to move a workpiece the size and weight of a world war two battleship to position with precision on the order of tens of microns at supersonic speeds. also its on mars and needs to work for one million years before service.
