“Sequential-art erotica” (dirty comics)

Introduction

Let’s get the disclaimers out of the way. This page contains no adult material (apart from the occasional risqué cover thumbnail). However, it does discuss and index publications unsuitable for minors. Searching for the works listed here is likely to bring up 18+ and NSFW explicit imagery. Please act responsibly and use good judgment.

This is a list of Western (European and North or Latin American) comic books that prominently feature erotic themes, sexual imagery (either suggestive or explicit), or other representations of human sexuality. It covers recent and relatively mainstream releases, alongside older classics and alternative underdogs. Although the focus is primarily on print publications, select online-only webcomics are also included.

The title references an old Onion article. Apart from being surprisingly well-informed for satire, it captures the inherent ridiculousness of any earnest attempt to discuss erotic comic books. It’s hard enough to maintain decorum when talking about comics featuring fully clothed characters, as there’s often something essentially immature about them; to avoid embarrassment, one might even resort to terms like “graphic novels”! But when the comics in question involve nudity or depictions of sexual acts, this defensive attitude only intensifies, leading to an overuse of euphemisms and overassertive claims about “artistic merit.”

And yet, artistic merit is precisely what I’m going to invoke to justify my work behind this list. While it does include some titles that are unquestionably and unapologetically trashy, this wasn’t my focus. Anyone with internet access can find some smutty drawings arranged in sequence; my goal in compiling this resource was to showcase the finest and most reputable works in this category.

While “reading for the plot” carries an obviously comedic connotation in this context, many of the listed titles feature well-defined characters and actual storylines, where sexually charged or graphic scenes are just one component. Although erotica is often considered a genre unto itself, the actual genre representation here spans broadly, from relationship dramas and slice-of-life comedies to dreamlike fantasies and sci-fi adventures. Some comics are even self-aware parodies of traditional “adult” plots, gleefully embracing the blatant logical and psychological implausibilities typical of the form.

Of course, it would be an overstatement to claim literary excellence across the board. Fortunately, many comics that fall short in narrative depth are redeemed by the quality of their artwork. Several comic book artists recognized for their erotic work rank among the most technically accomplished illustrators ever to work in the medium. This is especially true of the “old masters” of the pre-digital era, such as Italians Guido Crepax and Milo Manara, or the American Wallace Wood.

The comics weren’t chosen based on their specific content. The sole criterion for inclusion and ranking was their popularity in my sources, which reflect the generalized opinions – and biases – of the erotic comic readership. As a result, the selection skews heavily toward a straight male viewpoint. Some works, especially those by older creators, may display sexist or outright misogynistic attitudes. Others might contain themes and depictions that some readers could find disturbing, offensive, or morally objectionable. As the compiler, I don’t endorse any particular work on the list; I recommend conducting your own research and using your own discretion to determine whether a title is suitable for you.

Also, bear in mind that not every comic that centers on sexuality and sexual activity is guaranteed to be sexy or titillating. Some entries here are decidedly “sex-themed,” but their intent might be comedic, satirical, poignant, reflective, or political. Many comics from alternative or underground scenes, in particular, aim to shock and provoke rather than to stimulate; their place on the list indicates their notoriety rather than appeal.

I wasn’t entirely sure how to handle the adjacent category of “cheesecake,” “fanservice,” or “bad/good girl” comics – the lighter, action-adventure stories that rely on gratuitous sexualized imagery and innuendo-driven humor. Although such works repeatedly surfaced in my research, many seemed out of place alongside the more explicit entries here. Ultimately, I chose to exclude these racy but broadly appealing comics, leaving only those aimed squarely at adult audiences (and tagging them appropriately on the list).
