Rules-light and OSR sci-fi RPGs

Introduction

One reason why space-faring science fiction is a less popular RPG genre than heroic fantasy is that it can feel like so much work, for both GMs and players. Futuristic settings often demand more specificity and detail than their magical pre-industrial counterparts, and if they also involve planet-hopping, the scale alone can seem overwhelming. The common complaint is that sci-fi gaming leaves less room for handwaving and fallback to universally recognized worldbuilding tropes. That concern is, to some extent, justified: plenty of sci-fi RPGs are built on the premise that true fun lies in memorizing the technical specifications of every gadget and charting every planet’s tectonic profile, and that every character skill, no matter how specialized, should be explicitly listed on the sheet.

Fortunately for those of us who find that level of detail tiresome, there’s an abundance of sci-fi systems broadly regarded as “rules-light” or “low-crunch.” These terms are, of course, subjective and relative, and they range from ultra-light beer-and-pretzels one-page one-shots to more substantial games that can support long-term campaigns – just without the overhead of mechanical complexity. In compiling this list, I aimed for a representative spread across that spectrum, though I pruned a few entries at the upper end to keep things firmly in the low-to-medium-weight range. (As for these notionally “rules-medium” games, I kept them on the proviso that their modular design allows GMs to ignore the more involved subsystems.)

At the same time, this list serves as a long-promised sequel to my list of fantasy OSR and NSR games: many of the included titles are either sci-fi adaptations of old-school D&D rules or of their “new-school” reimaginings. Whatever their lineage, they tend to support gameplay that aligns with OSR principles. Including them here isn’t arbitrarily polluting the list with a foreign category: OSR games almost by definition keep their rule complexity low (recall the “rulings not rules” motto), and most of their sci-fi exemplars are downright minimalist.

Unsurprisingly, the space opera subgenre lends itself best to rules-light sci-fi gaming: its inherent “softness” means that tedious scientific detail can be safely ignored, and the setting’s trappings are easy to convey by reference to touchstones from well-known science fiction franchises. But the list isn’t limited to space opera. In fact, there’s considerable overlap with my earlier list of space horror and hard sci-fi games: many of the grimmer, more lethal games in that group are mechanically simple, perhaps on the assumption that characters won’t survive long enough to engage with any complex rule mechanisms. There’s less overlap, though, with my cyberpunk and gonzo science fantasy lists – I’ve assumed the games from those subgenres are too far removed from the space-based focus of the present list. I’ve also left out purely generic or universal lightweight systems, since those are covered on yet another list of mine.

And when you do find the right low-crunch or OSR sci-fi ruleset for your group, you might want to check out my list of sci-fi modules and campaigns for some adventure inspiration!
