Regions of Tajikistan

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
(Redirected from Provinces of Tajikistan)

Tajikistan is divided into three levels of administrative divisions. The first-level divisions consist of two regions (Tajik: вилоят, romanized: viloyat), namely Sughd and Khatlon; one autonomous region (Tajik: вилояти мухтор, romanized: viloyati mukhtor), the Kuhistoni Badakhshon Region; the Districts of Republican Subordination; and the capital city of Dushanbe, which enjoys separate status as a first-level division.

The second-level divisions consist of districts (Tajik: ноҳия, romanized: nohiya) and cities (Tajik: шаҳр, romanized: shahr). As of January 2024, Tajikistan has 47 districts (excluding the four districts within Dushanbe city), 23 cities, 66 towns (Tajik: шаҳрак, romanized: shahrak), and 368 rural jamoats (Tajik: ҷамоати деҳот, romanized: jamoati dehot). The occasionally cited figure of 62 districts is a misconception, as it combines the number of districts and cities. Prior to 2017, the country had about 58 districts, but the number has since been consolidated and reorganized.

Administrative divisions

[edit]

Each region is divided into districts (Tajik: ноҳия, romanized: nohiya), which are further subdivided into municipal units: either as urban municipalities called either as cities (Tajik: шаҳр, romanized: šahr) or towns (Tajik: шаҳрак, romanized: šahrak), or as rural municipalities called jamoats (Tajik: ҷамоати деҳот, romanized: jamoati dehot), which in turn are further subdivided into villages (Tajik: деҳа, romanized: deha).

As of January 2024, Tajikistan has a total of 47 districts, 23 cities, 66 towns, and 368 rural jamoats.[5][6]
