So you bought a Kobo? Good job.
Here are some links to make your Kobo more free and stop using built-in Kobo software.
Installation Instructions
Visit this forum thread to find a ‘one click install script’ (check the first and second post). It will install KFMon and NickelMenu which are launchers. It also bundles KOReader and/or Plato.
What are these ereader apps?
Plato is a document reader for Kobo’s e-readers. Supports Kobo readers with firmware version 4.6 or higher. It is a basic but beautiful ereader.
KOReader is a document viewer for e-ink devices. “It supports fixed page formats (PDF, DjVu, CBT, CBZ) and reflowable e-book formats (EPUB, FB2, Mobi, DOC, RTF, HTML, CHM, TXT).” It’s also faster and has way more options than the stock reader software.
Why install other software?
- faster than the stock, bloated Kobo reader
- Kobo can’t track what you’re reading
- more features built in to these 3rd party readers
- it’s fun!
Now, go forth and load up your ereader with books.
NOTE: You can install KOReader on Kindles too but it is a far more involved and terrible process. You should’ve bought a Kobo.
