Anne McCrady · Poet with a Press Pass

Hello, Friends,

This past week, stunned (again!) by vicious acts of revenge and violence by madmen in power, I grieved the anguishing death of Alexei Navalny. My PoetwithaPressPass.com poem post reflected my consuming outrage, my need to honor a true hero, and my reflection on how cowardly most of us live our lives.

What drives a man like Navalny to return again and again to face evil in human form? How did he defy his understanding and fear of certain danger and death and torture? Why was he willing to stand in for those he didn’t know when he so loved his family?

As those questions swirled in my mind, I passed a mirror in my home and glanced into it. My face startled me! How could I be so calm in this cruel world?

My thoughts abruptly shifted from Navalny’s heroism to my own supposed commitment to morality and strength of character…and to yours!

This week, let’s think about why so many of us run FROM trouble instead of away from it, and how can we use global news (horrible or heartening) to inspire us to be even a little bit more brave in speaking truth to power, overcoming our fears to forge ahead, and standing on the side of love.

Who inspires you to be more heroic? I would love hear your thoughts!

Anne
