Sometimes all our experiences point us towards an epiphany or at least a confirmation of something we forgot we knew. This week, for me, it has been that women should be running the world!
The signs have been unavoidable. First, I have several female friends who are emotionally and logistically handling difficult family situations — financial stress, marital concessions, impending death of loved ones, the throes of illness, the double devotion of daughtering and parenting, and the everyday feelings of exhaustion. I am in awe of their strength and love. You know who you are — wow…
In that mindset, on Friday I celebrated International Women’s Day by acknowledging — and contacting when I could — dozens of amazing women who have been a part of my life. Each of them has had a part in my story, and each one is the protagonist in an inspirational story of their own. My mother and sisters, my sisters-in-law and their daughters, my grandchildren. Teachers and classmates and neighbors and friends. Community leaders and business women. Artists, Writers, Singers, Songwriters, Musicians, Dancers. Women of every profession and role in life, and of every age.
As we move into March and commemorate Women’s History Month, my thoughts have turned to other women whose long ago stories had fed my belief in my role and capability in the world. Esther in the Old Testament. The women who supported Jesus’ street ministry. Sojourner Truth. Marie Curie. Eleanor Roosevelt. Pearl S. Buck. Rosa Parks. Rachel Carson. Annie Dillard. Sally Ride. Sandra Day O’Connor.
With hard-hearted, power-addicted, narcisstic men ravaging the planet and its people, let’s use the rebirth of Spring to renew our belief in the beautiful lives of women. Let’s affirm the devotion, infinite wisdom, proven strength, limitless generosity, healing compassion, and humble courage of women we know and those we haven’t met yet.
As your heart opens, I would love to hear stories of women you have known and admired — and your own stories of when you, yourself, were or did just what the world needed! We are all pretty wonderful!
