I have been writing creatively since I learned to use a pencil to make sentences, early on breaking my prose into lines of poetry and song. Next came stories, essays, speeches, missives, columns, liturgy, libretto, and, finally, books and anthologies. I often say I used words for air!
As all that was happening, I was living through the tumultous last half of the 20th century and into the terrifying first quarter of the 21st—not as a passive observer, but integrated into the world’s troubles as a girl who lost her father, an asthmatic, a social justice proponent, an out-spoken feminist, a wife and mother then grandmother, an education supporter, a science woman in a science family, a nature enthusiast, a politics follower, a believer in human potential, a kindness proponent, a world citizen, and an American.
The combination of those two threads has been five decades of what I call “Putting Words to Work for a Better World,” with the mission of inspiring others be involved in making a difference for themselves and others. That has taken many forms, one of which is my blogpost PoetWithAPress Pass.com, in which I have, since 2015, boldly written real time poems in response to world news and current events—speaking truth “slant” in order to “keep poetry relevant.”
That outreach, plus so many other of my literary endeavors, will continue. Now, in 2024, I will be adding a twice-monthly (the 5th and the 25th) newsletter here on Substack offering commentary from that point of view. My tone will be personal and, I hope, powerful enough to prompt you to have some epiphanies about your importance, some emotional moments of recognition, and a recommitment to your own relevance in this time of rising risk.
I believe that every moment is poetic, and every life is an inspirational story.Join me and let’s make a difference!
