Anne Marie Chaker · Lift by Anne Marie Chaker

Our recent guest, Wanda Sykes, has been busy. She recently released her Netflix special Legacy (which is hilarious) and is also taking her first dramatic role in the new film Undercard. On LIFT, my co-host, Pattie Sellers, and I spoke with Wanda about reinvention, resilience, and the surprising places strength comes from. Here are five takeaways that stayed with us.

1. Reinvention often begins with discomfort.
Before she was one of the most beloved comedians in America, Wanda Sykes worked at the NSA. By every conventional measure, she had done everything right: good grades, college, a stable government job. But she felt out of place. It took years of performing on weekends and burning through vacation days before she finally took the leap. The takeaway: Sometimes the clearest signal you’re on the wrong path is simply the feeling that you don’t belong there.

2. Great comedy is built like great writing: edit, trim, repeat.
As journalists, both Pattie and I were struck by how much Wanda’s process resembles reporting. Comedy, she said, is about “trimming the fat” and getting to the joke as efficiently as possible. She toured her latest act for more than two years before filming Legacy, constantly moving, refining, and cutting material. Great work—whether it’s journalism, comedy, or even leadership—is often less about adding and more about subtracting.

3. Humor starts with observation.
From the washcloth debate to everyday family quirks, Wanda sees comedy where others see routine. Comedians, she explained, are always asking: Why do we do this? What’s different here? The smallest observations often contain the biggest truths. That’s not just a recipe for comedy—it’s a recipe for creativity in any field, and coming up with new ideas.

4. Strength isn’t always visible.
When asked when she felt strongest, Wanda didn’t point to career success or public acclaim. She talked about facing breast cancer, making difficult decisions about her health, and choosing a bilateral mastectomy after early detection. Strength, she reminded us, isn’t always loud or physical. Sometimes it’s simply making hard choices for your future.

5. Legacy isn’t about fame. It’s about what you leave behind.
Fittingly, Wanda’s Netflix special is called Legacy. When we asked how she thinks about her own, her answer wasn’t about awards or achievements. She spoke about giving back—to Hampton University, to her community, and to others—and hoped people would remember that she was “full of love.”
