Last night I watched the World Cup, along with 200 of my neighbors—on a flat bed truck parked on the street. It was so New York.
I love when that happens because during the Knicks game neighborhood “watch party” on the street last month, I ran into Sonic Youth punk legend Kim Gordon, who lives in LA now but stays in the neighborhood when she is back in NY. Back in the 90’s, she was called a “punk feminist.” I love that. I also loved Sonic Youth back in the day, and her memoir Girl In A Band. She has not stopped, and why should she, and was touring in New York with her new band, and made an appearance on Jimmy Fallon. Kim was cool back when being cool was a thing.
After a while, I went inside to watch it on TV so I could watch Madonna without overhearing sexist white guys making stupid remarks about how “she should stop performing.” Meanwhile, Mick Jagger, 83, looks like he’s on the “Arthritis Tour.” Just sayin.’ Madge, you go girl.
I also didn’t want to throw up in public when Trump appeared to give out the awards, an appearance that could only be described as “Why does he have to make everything about him always?” and “Nobody cares.” Trump even tried to crash the victory photo at the end, but FIFA cut him out. The only reason people didn’t boo and give him the finger is they were afraid they’d be detained by ICE on the way out.
When I got home, I saw ex-soccer star turned sports host Alexi Lalas on Fox Sports, and omg I was suddenly reminded of meeting him 26 years ago, circa 2000, at the MTV video awards. Back then, those events were epic and the place to be. He asked if I wanted to go with him to an after-party and I said yes, because I thought he was cute with his wild hair and his grungy Gen X beard. I had no idea who he was.
