The Doer Vs The Dreamer

Andi Leeman · The World According To...

Today I read an article written by a woman named Eve who has written and published around 1,400 articles on Medium in the last 5 years.

She writes her articles early in the morning before going to work at her 9 to 5 job.

Every day she writes an article or two.

From what I can gather, she wasn’t writing to grow a business but to simply share her thoughts and get her head straight.

The money her writing created was additional money which made life more fun.

It was her ‘fun fund’, as I like to call it.

What I did notice is that she has amassed a rather decent 90,000 followers on Medium.

She took a year out from writing, I don’t know her reasons for that, but she is back and planning on building an online business selling digital products.

She didn’t say what kind of digital products she was planning on making, I just hope it’s not information products because thanks to AI the information publishing business is about to die a quick and painful death.

Whatever she is going to be making and selling, I believe she will be a success.

Why do I believe that?

Because she has proven to be able to turn off all distractions, focus on the job in front of her while ignoring statistics and numbers (monitoring them at the beginning is a sure fire way of becoming demoralised), and has built up a large following of people who want to read what she publishes.

She has created an audience to which she can sell to.

Now, I want to compare her story with John’s, a guy I personally know who wants to build an online business to replace his day job.

John and I have spoken numerous times and I know that he wants to be an internet marketer and earn a fuck-ton of money!

He wants to be just like all the big guys he buys products from.

He once bought a program from me where I set up his online business for him, met up once a week to discuss what he needed to do and to encourage him to keep at it… and do you know what?

He did FECK ALL!

He talked a good job.

He told me about what this guru chap was doing, what that guru gal was doing, and he told me what he wanted in the way of results and lifestyle.

But he never made a decision to stick with one thing and work at it.

He was all over the place.

His focus was fractured and his thinking was distracted.

I appreciate that he was older than most people and that he had a lot going on in his home life, but his lack of success was down to the fact that he didn’t commit to one thing and work at it.

He simply didn’t do anything.

Everytime we met up to talk, he would tell me about what he had read, what he had seen, and what other people were doing.

I once told him to focus on building a newsletter where he could write about all of what he was reading and learning.

I couldn’t say whether it would be hugely popular or successful, but at least it would be something for him to work on that he could grow each week.

But no, he just wanted the quick and easy method with big results.

Except, if he did have access to such a method he wouldn’t have actually done anything.

He was a wannabe.

He was a perpetual student choosing to read, watch, and talk instead of actually doing.

He was an actor playing the part.

He was a dreamer.

Whereas Eve was writing each morning within a short one or two hour period before starting work, he was spending any spare time he had filling his head with all the information and ideas he believed he would need to make a fuck-ton of money.

Eve was making money, he was spending it.

She was using her time productively, he was wasting his.

She has a following of 90,000 people, he has an audience of ZERO!

The reason for writing this newsletter is that last week I saw John had requested yet another free report from a successful big name marketer here in the UK.

Again, he is out on the prowl for the ‘one’ system that will make him rich.

He is looking for easy push-button profits!

But as I say, if it were handed to him he wouldn’t do the work that was required because he isn’t a doer, he is a dreamer.

I know that it isn’t easy to focus on one method, today, with people popping up every few minutes sharing how they made X amount of money doing something new, or declaring that a specific method is now outdated and useless.

There is so much information and disinformation floating around the web.

It is easy to be distracted and be plagued with choice overwhelm.

But if you want to succeed at something you need to make a decision on what you want to do and stick with it.

The word “decision” originates from the Latin verb decidere, meaning “to cut off,” a combination of de- (”off”) and caedere (”to cut”).

You have to choose one thing to do and cut out the rest of the noise, distractions, and methods.

If you are a dreamer, now is the time to sit down and have a long hard talk with yourself because dreamers don’t get anywhere.

They rarely succeed.

There is nothing wrong with having a dream or a vision, but without doing anything to work towards it, a dream is merely a wish..and wishy washy dreamers enjoy nothing of real life.

So, now is the time to ask yourself this one important question…

Are you a doer or a dreamer?

Until next time.

Have a great day.

Andi
