Putting one’s faith in an imagined future

I seem to be living in the land of Someday.

Someday…I’ll write the book of poems I’ve been planning for years around cosmology and astronomical discoveries. I’ve amassed quite a folder of articles on the topic, filled with science I don’t understand but seek to interpret through poetry, nonetheless.

Someday…I’ll write my anti-memoir about forgetting. I’ve always had a terrible memory and I’d like to understand why—or at least, explore how the engine works. I’ve amassed a file on that topic, too.

Someday…I’d like to write another novel. And to fall deep into the rabbit hole of planning, researching, outlining, developing characters, and even getting stuck in the middle. I look forward to finding my way into and through all that…

Someday…

For now, “Someday” will have to wait. I seem to be consumed by each day as it comes and by preparing for obligations just over the near horizon: a workshop to design, a craft essay to contribute, a writer’s conference to attend, a column (!) to prepare.

All fun stuff. All stuff I signed up for. Nobody put me in a chokehold and commanded me to get too busy to plan for the future—let alone make time for it to happen.

I’m the only one who can honestly answer this question:

Why isn’t “Someday” today?

And my answer is…

Because I’m not ready.

And right behind that answer, a hope:

When Someday arrives, I’ll know. I’ll be there. And I’ll be ready to meet it head-on.

For now, I’ll enjoy the delicious anticipation. And allow myself to believe that it’s all out there waiting for me, like a cake that never spoils.

Someday…readers will find TENT CITY. Read it. And then pass it along. Meanwhile, check out the BOOK CLUB KIT.
