Just a reminder: Today is my big town hall webinar event - everyone who RSVP’d should have already received their confirmation. If you did not, and still want to attend, email me ASAP - I have just a few spaces left, and would love to see you there!

This morning, a follow-up landed in my inbox.

That’s all fairly standard, we all follow up. I get hundreds of those a day. But when I clicked on the email thread, I realized something wild: The email was continuing a thread from six years ago.

I totally LOL’d, but I’m here to tell you, the publicist was actually doing something that made a ton of sense. They simply replied to an old thread to say they were working with the brand again, and if I happened to be writing about that category, they’d love to reconnect.

When I read this and realized what they were doing, I didn’t think, “Why are they emailing me after all this time?”

I thought, “Huh. Good idea.”

We’re all obsessed with timing. What’s the best day to pitch? What’s the best time? When should holiday pitching begin? When is it officially too late? How many follow-ups are acceptable?

I know this because these are the questions you all ask me all the time in our town halls and consulting sessions.

But maybe we’re asking the wrong question. Maybe the window isn’t nearly as closed as we think it is. Sometimes it’s just waiting for someone to climb back through it.

A pitch that wasn’t relevant in 2020 might be exactly what I need in 2026. Maybe I’m writing a trend story now that I wasn’t writing then. Maybe your client has evolved. Maybe consumer interests have changed. Maybe I’ve changed.

The key isn’t simply dusting off an old email and hitting send again. The key is giving the conversation a new reason to exist.

“I’m working with this client again.”

“They’ve launched a new product.”

“We’ve added new research.”

“This trend has become relevant.”

“I remembered we talked about this years ago and thought it might fit something you’re covering now.”

See the difference?

You’re not saying, “Just checking in...”

You’re saying, “Here’s what’s different.”

That applies to regular follow-ups, too. Every follow-up should move the conversation forward. Whether that’s new information, new images., ew timing, new retail availability or price points or flavors/colors, new angle.

Something.

Because “just bumping this” doesn’t actually add anything to the conversation, but giving me something new does that work for me.

So, that was what I was thinking, while making my coffee and traveling down memory lane via my six-year-old email thread.

Not every pitch has a short shelf life because sometimes the timing simply wasn’t right and sometimes the story or the need hadn’t happened yet. Sometimes neither of us knew we’d be having this conversation again six years later.

So yes, absolutely pay attention to pitch timing. Holiday deadlines matter. Editorial calendars matter. News cycles matter. But don’t assume that once the calendar page turns, the opportunity disappears forever. Sometimes all it takes is a thoughtful follow-up, a fresh angle, and a reason to reopen the conversation.

Turns out, some inbox windows stay open a lot longer than we think.

A reminder that anytime you pitch me, that email and your pitch will live on in my inbox forever. I may not be writing about pink martini glasses today, but six months from now (or…six years from now?!), if I am, and I go searching, and I find you, and you still have pink martini glasses…we will still have a conversation to be had and an opportunity to unfold. Never give up on yourself, the pitch, or our potential.

P.S. Before you write off a product, or an old pitch, ask yourself one question: What's new since the last time we talked? If the answer is "nothing," wait. If the answer is "a lot," you might already have your next great pitch.

July is holiday gift guide "high season,” and that makes right now the time to share new products and services with editors and writers of national publications for consideration of their popular December lists. The Recipe for Press Media Directory is a one-stop resource for everything you need to do just that. It's an essential and affordable database of relevant market editors and more in food, fashion, travel, business and lifestyle. Founded by former editor, Amy Flurry, the directory features emails, titles, active social media addresses, and a notes section with submission guidelines. It's created for people in the trenches by someone who knows how editors want to be pitched. This is why leading publicists, editors, and entrepreneurs across the country, including me, widely use and recommend it! Annual subscription price is just $195 and absolutely packed with value.

I partnered with Pitchcraft to be able to share a special offer just for my readers: Use code ALY200: new users will get $200 off their first month of the monthly PR Membership or code ALY400: This one offers new users $400 off their first year of the annual PR Membership. This is a great network to join because it’s a community of both PR professionals and journalists working together to find better ways to work together and share opportunities, and you know how much I believe in all of that

Exciting news from our friend Sarah Karger (who you’ve seen as the star expert panelist for several of our gift guide pitching workshops!) - she launched her new course, Affiliate Marketing & Performance-Based PR for Publicists - It’s built specifically to help PR pros and agencies add affiliate management as a core capability, something we all know is completely essential in today’s media landscape.

Since people are often asking about the status of stories from a while ago, and I only share stories in this newsletter that were published or updated in the current week, I have created a list of my author pages at various publications to which I contribute. Bookmark it and make your life a bit easier.

If you or your client are featured in any of these stories, I super appreciate any social media shares! Please remember to tag @alywalansky and the outlet.

Be sure to read the below list carefully. Many are stories I posted about yesterday, but some of yesterday's stories are no longer listed and a few new ones have been added since yesterday. This (below) is everything that is still a currently open opportunity as of today.

Please remember when pitching me: Email me at alywalansky@gmail.com - do NOT just hit reply on this newsletter, or there’s a good shot your email will be lost in the heap. Give your email a subject line that makes it clear which story you are pitching me for — it’ll help you in the long run.

Please consult my industry insights guides on submitting expert commentary, sending emails that will catch a journalist’s attention, how to craft pitches journalists will say ‘yes’ to, and the right and wrong way to submit photos, if you need any extra guidance before sending your pitches.

Tip: If you want any guidance on how to pitch for gift guides more successfully, be sure to check out the complete webinar recording linked here — it’s free!

Before pitching: Please be sure to refer to my photo submission guidelines for help with photo submission best practices!

I’m looking to round up gifts for Knicks fans who are all about the Knicks commemorative memorabilia. If you have anything you think may work, please pitch me!

I’m also loving for great ways to stay cool this summer - think cooling items for your apartment, cooling sheets, lightweight summer dresses/shoes, and so forth.

Believe it or not, I’m working on back-to-school (leaning more toward college/young adulthood than kids) gift roundups. Think return to dorm more than return to recess. Email if you have anything that may be a fit!

I’m a contributor to Dining Out NYC (see a recent story I did for them on the Las Vegas influence on NYC’s culinary scene), and always open to pitches related to NYC dining trends, and openings, news, and so forth.

I’m sourcing for product pitches and expert commentary related to thrifting wisdom, hosting and etiquette tips, methods/tips to save money at the grocery store, cozy, shoppable finds or things that can upgrade life in some way, reusable/greener swaps for your everyday home finds, low-tech heating/cooling tricks. If you have any pitches, send them my way!

I have a few updates for the Newsweek’s Readers’ Choice Awards, of which (as a reminder!), I am on the expert panel of journalists who create nominations in a variety of lifestyle categories.

Currently, I’m working on nominees for a Where To Stay contest section The contests in this theme will be: Best Hotel Brand for Couples, Best Hotel Brand for Families, Best Hotel Brand for Business Travelers, Best Boutique Hotel Brand, Best Vacation Rental Site (i.e. online booking sites like AirBNB, Trivago, kayak, etc…). Rather than specific locations, we’re looking for the most trusted hotel brands you’ll always circle back to. As always, you don’t have to do any sort of submission guidelines or specifics, just make sure your client is on my radar and I’ll take it from there when submitting my nominations to the team. (Wrapping this one up this week!0

It’s almost National Chicken Wing Day, National Oyster Day, and Hot & Spicy food day, and I’m looking for creative, interesting, delicious dishes and cocktails.

To pitch, please include:

  • Name of drink/dish

  • Restaurant/bar where it can be ordered (as well as city, state, URL)

  • description

  • quote from chef/bartender about dish (and name and title of person being quoted)

  • and LINK to image, with an identifying file name, and any appropriate photo credits included

(I know I give these guidelines over and over, but every day I get dozens of pitches that disregard them, so it bears repeating! <3)!

Email me at alywalansky@gmail.com asap please! All the same parameters will apply when emailing.

Thanks!
