The Raven Dreams: Book One
Chapter 20: Eva
The chill, hard ground met Eva’s back with punishing force, and her feet slipped out from under her as she toppled backward. Simon watched as she rose from the cave floor, sword gripped firmly in her hand.
“I wasn’t ready,” Eva huffed.
Simon paced in a half-circle, observing her in the infuriating way he did, not saying a word. It made it impossible for Eva to know what he was thinking. He obviously had thoughts moving around in his mind. His expression spoke in ways his words refused.
A few days had passed in the cave with Simon. Eva had learned a lot in a short time. Simon was a man of few words, but he had a tenderness about him that made Eva feel safe in his company. At night, he often disappeared without telling her. She woke at every hour of the night, and each time his bed was empty.
