They’d almost broken free. Now the iron-clad door sealed them in, promising that every future escape would taste exactly like this one: bitter, brief, and doomed. Aron’s silence weighed heavily in the tiny, dank makeshift prison. Isaak blamed himself.
If it weren’t for me, she would be safe at home right now.
He inched closer to her. When she didn’t retract, he rested his hand on hers. He knew better than to speak. Aron was in shock. No words could comfort her now, and Isaak wasn’t sure he had any comforting words to give.
Aron wasn’t the only one with a heaviness inside. Isaak had felt himself slipping into the darkness for months. And now, here in the literal dark of the dungeon, he fell deeper.
