Thrae’s cackle split the air like something feral finally unleashed. Around them, Vitalists clawed past each other toward any crack of light, any way out. The hall had become something unrecognizable. The order that had held Amortera together had always lived in the Sages. With Talvy dead and Thrae turned enemy, what remained was something dangerous. Survival.
Isaak wrenched against the chains, the metal biting deeper with every pull. He could feel the rawness of it, the wet heat of blood running down his wrists, but he kept pulling anyway. It was the blood that finally gave him what he needed, slick enough to drag his hands through.
He crossed to Aron without thinking, pressing both palms flat against her bindings, and summoned the heat. But the elemental energy didn’t feel pure… the way it used to. Something moved in the undercurrent, dark and slow, like smoke underneath a door.
As the chains fell, Aron moved before Isaak registered it, all of her fury finding a single point. Thrae.
