Was JFK’s Assassination a Conspiracy?

November 22, 1963. President Kennedy is shot in Dallas. Lee Harvey Oswald is arrested, then shot dead two days later by Jack Ruby in front of television cameras and a room full of police. Oswald never stands trial. In 1964, the Warren Commission concludes he acted alone. Every poll taken in the decades since has shown most Americans don’t believe it.

That skepticism isn’t irrational. In 1979, the House Select Committee on Assassinations reviewed the evidence and concluded Kennedy was probably killed as a result of a conspiracy, based partly on acoustic recordings suggesting a second shot from the grassy knoll. A separate scientific review challenged that acoustic analysis in 1982. Two official U.S. government investigations reached opposite conclusions. That’s not a fringe situation.

Suspects proposed over the decades include the CIA, which had reasons to resent Kennedy after the Bay of Pigs disaster, the Mafia, which Robert Kennedy was aggressively prosecuting at the time, anti-Castro Cuban exiles who felt betrayed, and the Soviet KGB. Each theory has supporting evidence and serious weaknesses. None has produced a document or credible witness that closes the case.

CIA documents released in 2022 and 2023, after decades of classification, confirmed the agency withheld information from the Warren Commission regarding Oswald’s contacts in Mexico City and the Soviet Union. Nothing in those releases proved a conspiracy. What they confirmed is that the official investigation worked with incomplete information, which raises its own questions.

What isn’t in dispute: Oswald had documented connections to both pro-Castro and anti-Castro groups, defected to the Soviet Union and returned without serious scrutiny from U.S. intelligence agencies, and was killed before he could speak in court. Whether that adds up to a lone gunman or something larger is a question the available evidence hasn’t fully answered.
