Difficult people show up in every season of life. Sometimes they’re colleagues, family, friends… and sometimes, if we’re honest, it’s us.
What I’ve learned is this: we can’t control what others say or how they live. We can only choose how we respond. For years, I took it personally when someone close to me acted difficult. I felt triggered, judged, even drained. But eventually, I realised it’s not about me.
Their behavior is usually a reflection of their own struggles, their own unmet needs, their own pain. Maybe they’re missing fulfillment, maybe they’re grieving, maybe they’re just caught in their own storm. Whatever it is, it isn’t mine to carry or fix.
My responsibility is to set clear boundaries, protect my energy, and if needed, step back with kindness. At the same time, I can silently send them love, compassion, and healing.
The real power lies in not reacting, but in living by example. By holding our peace, we create space for ourselves, and maybe even for them to grow.
