This post walks through how to get a free small Linux virtual machine (VM) that stays on 24/7 in 4 steps. Here’s what to expect from this post:

• Outcome: a Linux VM you SSH into and leave running 24/7 for $0.

• Time: about 1–2 hours, with some waiting in between.

• Troubleshooting steps: fixes to get past SSH timeout issues and instance creation failures that I ran into.
