Macy's is letting its biggest rival manage its ad platform, proving that when the numbers are right, even the fiercest competitors are willing to share a bed ... and maybe some data.

There are corporate partnerships and then there are corporate decisions that feel like a scene from a dramatic rom-com where the spunky protagonist agrees to a date with their arch-rival. Such is the whimsical new reality of retail, where Macy’s has decided to test a partnership with the Amazon Retail Ad Service. It’s an arrangement that promises to be either a stroke of genius or a cautionary tale, with no room for a happy middle.

In the grand scheme of things, the bet is simple here. Make it easier for brands to spend money and, no doubt they will, they will. Macy’s is essentially telling brands: Don’t worry about learning our quirky, bespoke ad platform. Just use Amazon’s console, the one you’re already familiar with, to buy our sponsored ads.

It's a pragmatic approach to increase revenue. For the ad world, this is a real-life soap opera. Can two rivals co-exist? Time will tell if this is a beautiful partnership or if Macy's wakes up one morning to find all its customers have been secretly redirected over to Prime.

At its core, this partnership is an honest acknowledgement of Amazon’s power. It’s a very public admission that the easiest way to get things done is to ask the person who already runs the entire neighborhood. For us in advertising, it’s a great reminder that in the world of ad tech, a direct competitor isn't just a rival - it's also a potential revenue stream waiting to be unlocked.

One can only hope the Macy's-Amazon partnership isn't built on the same foundation as a lavish Venice wedding, where the success metrics were reportedly measured by the designer labels worn by attendees and the number of paparazzi flashes.

So glad you made it to the end! In a world of infinite scrolls, your attention is the ultimate KPI.

Seriously, though .. thanks for being here!
