Petra Cortright is an American artist working in video, digital painting, and consumer software. Her practice layers found imagery, painterly digital brushstrokes, and her own image into work that examines identity and femininity onscreen.
She started early. In 2007 she began uploading self-portrait webcam videos to YouTube, years before the selfie became ubiquitous, and one of them, vvebcam, now sits in the collection of the Museum of Modern Art. Her digital paintings begin as files of hundreds of layers, which she prints on linen, paper, and aluminum. She has shown at the Venice Biennale and the New Museum, collaborated with Stella McCartney, and her work is held by MoMA, LACMA, the Hammer Museum, and the Moderna Museet, among others. She lives and works in Los Angeles.
What are you working on currently?
Always commissions and shows - I work with a lot of (lovely) people and there is always a steady amount of requests which I am very very grateful for- but ideally, my favorite is always to make work for no reason when possible. It’s so pure that way. ive also been doing a lot of research about roses for something special :)

What do you want the future to look like?
I am a mother of two young boys so the future is only framed in my mind as what could be the best for them, everything that a mother would want for her children. I would love a functioning society... I would love for them to be able to live in a California that is functioning. A country that is functioning. It’s so basic really.

What’s a belief you hold that most people in your industry would disagree with?
Art is about beauty
What’s something you’ve changed your mind on in the last few years?
Going out. I used to prioritize sleep and I will again some day, but now is not the time, now is my time to have one foot in the grave but investigate the night time again.
What’s the best piece of advice you’ve ignored?
“Say less”

Twitter (X) I still say twitter bc I have had the account for so long and it’s hard for me to call it x - next year I will have had the account for 20 years. They should send me flowers. ill never log off its my most stupid and carefree social media where i can clear my throat chakra
