Your friend called you “the organized one” again at lunch last week. You smiled. Inside, you’d spent forty minutes that morning looking for your car keys while rewriting the same grocery list, trying to remember whether you’d answered your sister’s birthday text. You hadn’t.

She has no idea. To most people, even the ones closest to you, you’re the one who has it handled. You’ve been holding it together so long you barely notice you’re doing it anymore.

The mask started early, not on purpose. You noticed that people responded better to a certain version of you, the one who showed up prepared, who laughed off forgetting instead of freezing, who said “I’m great” fast enough that nobody looked twice.

You practiced that version for decades. We learned to cover the gaps before anyone could see them, to have the answer ready, to make the outside match what everyone expected.

And they worked.
