Midweek.
You were tasting the food.
Then at some point you were just timing the meal.
You were in the conversation.
Then you were managing it.
You probably didn’t feel the switch.
I never do.
I think I crossed over a dozen times today.
I caught maybe one.
That one is worth catching.
If you read Sunday’s essay — this is the space between the seal and the sea lions.
But you don’t need that to try this.
Pick one moment from the last 24 hours where something went flat.
A conversation.
A meal.
A paragraph.
A drive home.
Rewind to the beat just before.
Name it in one sentence:
“I went from ______ to ______.”
Listening → rehearsing.
Tasting → timing.
Being with my kid → getting through bedtime.
Just the label.
You’re not trying to stay on the alive side.
You’re trying to hear the click when you leave it.
Because it doesn’t slam the door. It just slips out while you’re being productive.
With you in this,
Adam.
