Interesting Is Not Enough: How to Build Solutions That People Use, Value and Sustain

Creative problem-solving often produces ideas that feel exciting, original, and full of promise. A team may leave a workshop energised by a concept that sounds fresh. A founder may discover an idea that feels commercially attractive. A consultant may design a solution that looks elegant on paper. The concept has energy. People like it. It may even be visually impressive, which can be dangerously persuasive.

But an interesting concept is not the same as a working solution.

A working solution does more than attract attention. It solves the right problem for the right people in a way that can be used, delivered, sustained and improved. It creates value beyond the moment of inspiration. It survives contact with reality. It makes something better in a way that matters.

This distinction is crucial. Many teams pursue novelty because it feels creative. They fall in love with what is different, clever or fashionable, while overlooking whether the solution is desirable, feasible, viable, usable, sustainable, scalable and effective. The result is familiar: an impressive concept that nobody adopts, an innovative idea that is too complex to implement, or a beautiful proposal that solves the wrong problem with great confidence.

For entrepreneurs and professionals, the discipline is not only about generating and selecting ideas. It is to understand what makes a solution work. This means moving beyond “Is this interesting?” to ask, “Does this create meaningful value? Can it be delivered? Will people use it? And how will we know it has worked?”

That question changes the quality of creative problem-solving. It turns imagination into impact.

WHY: Why Solution Quality Matters

Solution quality matters because creativity is not rewarded simply for being original. It is rewarded when it creates value. A solution may be imaginative, but if it does not solve a real problem, improve an experience, remove friction, unlock progress or generate measurable benefit, it remains a concept rather than an outcome.

This is where many creative efforts become distracted. Novelty is seductive. It brings energy into the room. It makes people feel that something fresh is happening. It can signal innovation, ambition and courage. But novelty alone is not enough. A new idea can still be irrelevant. A clever idea can still be unusable. A bold idea can still be commercially weak. A beautiful solution can still fail quietly because it does not fit the lives, needs or behaviours of the people it is meant to serve.

Entrepreneurs and organisational teams often experience this in different ways, but the lesson is the same. A founder may create an app, course, service or product that feels distinctive, only to discover that customers do not care enough to pay for it. A professional team may design a process, platform, programme or customer experience that looks impressive in a presentation but fails in use. In both cases, the concept may be technically possible, emotionally exciting and visually polished, but still struggle because it does not solve a valued problem in a usable way.

Without a clear understanding of solution quality, teams confuse movement with progress. They launch something because it has momentum. They approve something because it has polish. They invest in something because it feels innovative. Then they wonder why adoption is weak, impact is unclear, or the problem keeps returning in a slightly different guise.

A good solution must answer a more demanding set of questions. Is it desirable to the people it serves? Is it feasible to deliver? Is it viable over time? Does it address the root cause rather than merely decorating the symptom? Is it usable enough for people to adopt? Can it be sustained and scaled? Can its impact be measured?

These questions do not diminish creativity. They make it stronger. They help ensure that creative energy is not wasted on solutions that look impressive but do not work.

WHAT: What Makes a Solution Work?

A working solution is not defined by a single quality. It is the result of several qualities coming together. A solution must create value for people, function within real-world constraints, make sense economically or organisationally, and produce the intended effect.

The most useful way to understand this is to look at several characteristics of effective solutions. Each characteristic answers a different question. Together, they help a team distinguish between a concept that is merely interesting and a solution that can genuinely work.

1. Desirability: People Need, Want or Value It

A solution works only if it matters to the people it is intended to serve. Desirability asks whether the solution addresses a meaningful need, pain point, aspiration or job to be done.

This is not the same as people saying, “That sounds interesting.” Interest is easy. Commitment is harder. A desirable solution is one that people are willing to use, adopt, recommend, pay for, support or change their behaviour around.

For entrepreneurs, desirability is closely connected to customer value. Do people recognise the problem? Do they care enough to act? Does the solution fit their priorities, language and context? For professionals inside organisations, desirability may mean employees will actually use the process, leaders will sponsor it, customers will experience value, or stakeholders will support the change.

An undesirable solution may still be clever. It may even win applause in the room. But applause is not adoption.

2. Feasibility: It Can Be Delivered Well

Feasibility asks whether the solution can be built, delivered or implemented with the available resources, skills, systems, time and partnerships.

An idea may be attractive, but if the team cannot deliver it reliably, the solution will fail in practice. Feasibility includes technical capability, operational capacity, talent, infrastructure, process, timing, compliance and support.

This does not mean teams should only pursue easy ideas. Some valuable solutions require new capabilities. But feasibility must be understood honestly. A solution may be feasible now, later, with partners, or only after major investment. Each of these has different implications.

Creative teams sometimes avoid feasibility conversations because they fear becoming negative. But feasibility is not the enemy of creativity. It is the conversation that helps creativity find a workable form.

3. Viability: It Can Survive Economically or Organisationally

Viability asks whether the solution makes sense over time. For a business, this may include revenue, pricing, margins, delivery costs, customer acquisition and retention, and commercial sustainability. For an organisation, it may include budget, governance, strategic fit, adoption effort, maintenance and ongoing value.

A solution can be desirable and feasible but still not viable. People may want it, and the team may be able to deliver it, but the economics or organisational burden may not make sense.

For example, a highly customised service may delight clients but consume so much delivery time that it cannot scale profitably. A new internal process may improve accuracy, but require so much administration that people quietly work around it. A leadership programme may be valuable, but if it relies entirely on a single overextended expert, it may not be sustainable.

Viability asks: Can this continue without exhausting the people, money or system that supports it?

4. Root-Cause Fit: It Solves the Real Problem

Some solutions fail because they solve the symptom rather than the cause. This is one of the most common traps in creative problem-solving.

A team may notice low employee engagement and design a recognition campaign, when the real issue is unclear leadership, poor workload management or lack of trust. A business may respond to weak sales by redesigning its website, when the real issue is an unclear value proposition. A consultant may propose a skills workshop when the deeper problem is misaligned incentives or poor decision rights.

Root-cause fit asks whether the solution addresses the root cause of the problem. It requires curiosity, diagnosis and sometimes the courage to question the original problem statement.

This matters because symptom-solving creates temporary relief. Root-cause solving creates lasting change.

5. Usability: People Can Understand and Adopt It

Usability asks whether people can understand, access, apply and integrate the solution into their lives or work. A solution that is too complex, confusing or demanding may fail even if the underlying idea is strong.

This is where many clever concepts stumble. They may make sense to the creators, but not to the people expected to use them. If a solution requires too much explanation, too many steps or too much behavioural effort, adoption will suffer.

Usability asks: Can people use this without unnecessary friction?

6. Sustainability: It Can Be Maintained Over Time

Sustainability asks whether the solution can be supported, maintained and improved after the initial excitement fades. A solution that depends on heroic effort is usually fragile. Heroic effort may launch it, but it rarely sustains it.

A sustainable solution has a realistic support model. It has owners, routines, resources and the ability to adapt. It does not quietly collapse once the original champion becomes busy, tired or promoted into a different problem.

Sustainability asks: Can this keep working without exhausting the people or system behind it?

7. Scalability: It Can Grow or Repeat at the Right Level

Scalability asks whether the solution can grow, be repeated, adapted or expanded without losing quality or becoming unmanageable. Not every solution must scale massively, but every solution should be clear about its intended scale.

A boutique coaching experience, for example, may not need to scale as much as a software platform. But it still needs a delivery model that can be repeated reliably. A digital product may scale widely, but only if the user experience, support model and economics can handle growth.

Scalability asks: Can this grow, repeat or adapt at the scale we actually need?

Good solutions are not only clever. They are valuable, workable and liveable.

HOW: How to Build Solutions That Actually Work

Building solutions that work requires a different mindset. Solution quality is not something to inspect at the end, like checking whether a cake has mysteriously become nutritious. It must be designed from the beginning.

This means asking quality questions while the solution is still being shaped. What problem are we really solving? What would “working” mean to different stakeholders? What value must the solution create? What assumptions are we making about desirability, feasibility and viability? What would make adoption easy or difficult? How will we know whether the solution is producing the intended effect?

These questions help the team avoid a common trap: building first and discovering later that the solution is not wanted, usable, sustainable, or aimed at the real problem. They also prevent evaluation from becoming a late-stage judgement exercise, when too much time, money and reputation have already been invested.

The mindset is simple: design for quality from the start. Define the problem clearly. Make success visible. Balance desirability, feasibility and viability. Check the root cause. Design for usability. Decide how the impact will be measured.

The Workable Solution Test: Practical Strategies for Moving Beyond Interesting Concepts

The following strategies help entrepreneurs and professional teams evaluate whether a solution is likely to work in the real world.

1. Define the Job the Solution Must Do

Before judging the solution, define the job it must perform. Ask:

  • What problem must this solve?

  • For whom must it solve it?

  • What progress should it help them make?

  • What would be different if it worked?

This moves the team away from vague enthusiasm. It creates a clear target.

For example, “improve communication” is too broad. “Help newly promoted managers hold difficult performance conversations within their first 90 days” is clearer, more testable and more useful.

2. Test Desirability Before Building Too Much

Do not assume people want the solution because the team likes it. Test whether the target audience recognises the problem, values the outcome and is willing to act.

Useful methods include customer interviews, stakeholder conversations, concept tests, landing pages, waitlists, prototype reactions, pricing conversations and small pilots.

Look for behaviour, not only compliments. People may say an idea is interesting out of politeness. Stronger signals include signing up, paying, asking for implementation details, requesting a pilot, using the prototype or changing behaviour.

3. Check Feasibility Honestly

Ask what it would take to deliver the solution well. Consider people, skills, systems, processes, technology, compliance, partnerships, timing and quality control.

Useful questions include:

  • Can we deliver this with current capability?

  • What would need to change?

  • Where are the operational risks?

  • What would make delivery unreliable?

  • What support or partners might be needed?

Feasibility should not be used to kill ambition too early. It should be used to shape the path from ambition to execution.

4. Understand the Viability Model

A solution must make sense over time. For entrepreneurs, this means understanding pricing, margin, demand, delivery cost and repeatability. For organisations, it means understanding budget, ownership, maintenance, governance and strategic value.

Ask:

  • What will this cost to create, deliver and maintain?

  • Who will fund or sponsor it?

  • What value will justify the investment?

  • Can it continue without exhausting the team?

  • What would make it financially or organisationally unsustainable?

Viability is where attractive ideas either become responsible solutions or expensive hobbies.

5. Diagnose the Root Cause

Before committing to a solution, test whether it addresses the real cause of the problem.

Ask:

  • What symptoms are we seeing?

  • What might be causing them?

  • What evidence supports that diagnosis?

  • What would happen if we solved only the symptom?

  • What would need to change for the problem to stay solved?

Root-cause thinking prevents teams from building elegant answers to the wrong question.

6. Balance Innovation with Usability

A solution can be new without being confusing. Innovation should create a useful difference, not unnecessary complexity.

Ask:

  • What is genuinely new or better here?

  • What must feel familiar enough for people to adopt it?

  • Where might users become confused or resistant?

  • What can be simplified without losing value?

  • What support would make adoption easier?

The best solutions often combine novelty with recognisability. They stretch people, but not so far that adoption becomes exhausting.

7. Design for Sustainability and Scalability

Ask whether the solution can live beyond the first burst of energy.

Sustainability questions include:

  • Who will maintain this?

  • What routines, resources or systems are needed?

  • What could break over time?

  • What would make people stop using it?

  • Scalability questions include:

  • Can this be repeated or expanded?

  • What happens when more people use it?

  • Does quality depend on one person?

  • What must be standardised, and what can remain flexible?

A solution that cannot be sustained may create a temporary success followed by quiet decay. Very glamorous, but not ideal.

8. Measure Effectiveness and Impact

Decide how the team will know whether the solution is working.

Use a mix of measures:

  • Adoption: Are people using it?

  • Experience: Do people understand and value it?

  • Behaviour: Are people doing anything differently?

  • Performance: Is the desired result improving?

  • Sustainability: Is it continuing without excessive effort?

  • Learning: What are we discovering that should shape the next version?

Measurement should not be punitive. It should be used to learn, improve and decide whether to continue, adapt or stop.

A Worked Example: From Interesting Concept to Working Solution

Imagine a consultancy develops an idea for a digital leadership confidence platform. It sounds attractive. It could include videos, diagnostics, tools, reflection prompts, community features and progress tracking. The concept feels modern and scalable.

But is it a working solution?

The team begins by defining the job: help newly promoted managers build confidence in handling difficult conversations during their first 90 days.

It tests desirability by interviewing HR leaders and recently promoted managers. The feedback is useful. Managers do want support, but they do not want another content platform. They want short, practical tools and live practice. HR leaders want something easy to integrate into existing development pathways.

The team checks feasibility. Building a full platform would require significant technical development, ongoing support and content maintenance. Delivering a short blended programme is more feasible with current capability.

It examines viability. A custom platform would be expensive and slow to sell. A modular learning sprint with optional digital resources has a clearer route to revenue and lower delivery risk.

It checks the root cause. The real issue is not a lack of information. Managers already have access to articles and videos. The deeper problem is a lack of confidence, rehearsal and feedback. A content-heavy platform would address the symptom but miss the cause.

The team redesigns the solution. Instead of building a full platform, it creates a practical blended offer: a diagnostic conversation, short digital preparation tools, a live practice lab and a follow-up reflection session.

The solution is less flashy than the original concept, but more likely to work. It is desirable, feasible, and viable; rooted in the real problem; easier to use and test.

That is the difference between an interesting concept and a working solution.

A Workable Solution Scorecard

Use this scorecard to test whether a solution is ready for further development, piloting or implementation.

Desirability: Do the intended users or customers recognise the need and value the solution?

Feasibility: Can we deliver this well with the people, skills, systems, and resources available or realistically obtainable?

Viability: Can this survive economically or organisationally over time?

Root-cause fit: Does this address the underlying problem rather than only the visible symptom?

Usability: Can people understand, access, and use it without unnecessary friction?

Sustainability: Can this be maintained without exhausting the team or the system?

Scalability: Can this grow, repeat, or adapt at the scale we need?

Impact: How will we know whether it is working?

For each area, use a simple rating:

  • Strong

  • Unclear

  • Weak

Use the ratings to guide the next decision. A solution with mostly “strong” ratings may be ready for piloting or further development. Any “unclear” rating should become a learning question for the next test. For example, what evidence would help us better understand desirability, feasibility, or impact?

Any “weak” rating should be treated as a design challenge before the solution moves forward. If a solution has more than two “weak” ratings, it should usually be redesigned before piloting, because the risk of learning too little, too late is high.

The aim is not to punish the solution. The aim is to improve it before too much is invested.

WHAT BECOMES POSSIBLE: From Novelty to Real Impact

When teams understand what makes a solution work, creative problem-solving becomes more effective and more trustworthy.

Ideas are no longer pursued simply because they are interesting. They are developed because they create value, solve meaningful problems and can survive in the real world. This does not make creativity less bold. It makes boldness more useful.

Entrepreneurs benefit because they make sharper choices. They become less likely to spend months building products, services or offers that customers do not value. They can test desirability, feasibility, and viability earlier, reducing wasted effort and improving market fit.

Professional teams benefit because innovation becomes more credible. Stakeholders can see that creative solutions are not just attractive concepts, but disciplined responses to real problems. This builds confidence in creative work and increases support for implementation.

Users and customers benefit because solutions are designed around their actual needs, behaviours and constraints. The solution becomes easier to understand, easier to use and more likely to create meaningful improvement.

Implementation improves because feasibility, sustainability, and scalability are considered early on. Teams do not discover too late that the solution depends on unavailable resources, unclear ownership or heroic effort.

Measurement improves because effectiveness is defined from the beginning. The team knows what it is trying to change and how it will learn whether the solution is working. This makes adaptation easier and reduces the temptation to keep defending a solution that is not producing value.

Most importantly, creativity becomes more responsible. It remains imaginative, but it is also accountable. It honours novelty, but it does not worship it. It asks whether the solution genuinely helps, works and lasts.

That is when creative problem-solving moves from impressive thinking to meaningful impact.

A Solution Works When It Creates Value in Reality

What makes a solution work is not simply originality, polish or enthusiasm. A solution works when it solves a meaningful problem for the right people in a way that can be used, delivered, sustained and measured.

This requires more than a good idea. It requires desirability, feasibility and viability. It requires root-cause thinking. It requires usability, sustainability and scalability. It requires evidence of effectiveness and impact.

For entrepreneurs and professionals, this is a critical creative discipline. It helps prevent the trap of pursuing novelty instead of usefulness. It protects resources, strengthens adoption and improves the chances that creative work will produce real change.

The strongest solutions are not always the flashiest. They are the ones that fit the problem, serve the user, work within constraints and create measurable value.

Interesting concepts may win attention. Working solutions earn trust.
