Entrance to the Park was free for 68 years.
That was how it was supposed to be.
Also worth remembering that when the Park came to be in 1919 there wasn’t too many cars — or for that matter roads for cars (the famous ‘Carriage Roads’ out of bounds).
Entrance Fees were instituted as of May 8, 1987.
The locals were NOT happy. Now they would have to pay to enter & enjoy their Park. There were protests & a number of locals crashed their vehicles through the entrance barrier.
We are now used to the FEES.
This has been a respite for some. I have a VALID FOR LIFE ‘Senior Pass’. Since getting that, nearly a decade ago, it has always been FREE.
Did you know of this 1987 date?
