When Science meets Quran : The Primordial Singularity (Episode : 1)

Here, I will be decoding modern cosmology and exploring how stunning cosmic discoveries were beautifully mirrored in these sacred texts over fourteen centuries ago. Join me as we bridge faith and reason, uncovering the universe's greatest secrets one verse at a time.

Ever had a thought what’s beyond the stars and how massive and perfect the solar system is?. As a child I always had these intrusive thoughts about traveling through space and unraveling the mysterious world behind stars, how big could it possibly be? From fantasizing myself into reaching different celestial bodies to feeling disheartened about the lost Pluto. I had created my own little Metaphysical reality  and had hidden plans within my tiny self conquering galaxies, having meetings with researchers and scientists. Along with normal toys, I had space toys specially, and would place them on top of my shelf. The curiosity rose day by day and its true, with time our expectations about ourselves decrease, one by one. But nevertheless, even today, a glimpse towards the mighty sky puts myself a decade back to my childhood.

There are facts about our universe which may sound absolutely groundbreaking to us. Subhanallah! Time is such a powerful force that it can change the entire physical reality, imagine! When you look at the Sun, you see it as it was 8 minutes ago. When you look at the Moon, you see it as it was 1.3 seconds ago. If an alien in a galaxy 65 million light-years away looked at Earth right now with a super-powerful telescope, they wouldn't see cars or cities, they would see dinosaurs.

You think you aren’t tall enough? Our height may increase up to 3% or more in space as of on earth! Every single atom of iron in our blood, calcium in our bones, and oxygen we breathe was cooked inside the core of a massive star billions of years ago through nuclear fusion.

All these facts and much more, if we get to know how massive the space is and how tiny we are, we wouldn’t be able to do anything but  to admire how perfectly the universe was designed by the almighty, Allahu Akbar! It blows my mind.

An entire study is dedicated to this field known as cosmology, in which the actual observational research started in the early 20th century, In this series, I will be breaking  it down entirely into 3 major events and show how The Holy Quran explains it word by word, how a 1400 year old revelation rectifies and examines so perfectly and explicitly to what our today’s scientists know and claim as their “discovery”. This article contains the first episode ie. the initial state of universe.

Cosmology is the scientific study of the universe as a whole entity. It explores the universe's origin, evolution, large-scale structure, and its ultimate fate. While humans have been looking at the stars and creating creation myths for millennia, early philosophers and astrophysicists believed the universe to be static and stationary that had no beginning, and that earth was the origin of the entire metaphysical reality and was the stationary centre of the universe, while some believed sun was the origin, these were just assumptions.

The actual research started in early 20th century when Einstein proposed relativity and said the universe to be either expanding or contracting, but it cannot be static, then Georges Lemaitre (Father of Big Bang) used Einstein’s equations to show that the universe was expanding. Lemaitre went a step further, proposing that if you rewind time, the universe must have started from a single point (The Primeval Atom).

I’ve broken down these cosmological events into 3 major happenings:-

1) The Primordial Singularity and Big Bang (This article).

2) The Early Cosmic Smoke and Continuous Expansion.

3) The Conclusion : Big Crunch.

What surprises me is that the Quran described these exact cosmic stages, moreover so precisely through deep rhetorical analysis, and all this over 1,400 years ago, Allahu Akbar! Lets decode this in a simple way:-

1. The Primordial Singularity and Big Bang

Modern physics dictates that approximately 13.8 billion years ago, all matter, energy, space, and time were compressed into a gravitational singularity—an infinitely dense, zero-volume point where distinct celestial bodies did not exist. This state was followed by a rapid, violent expansion known as the Big Bang, which cleaved space open and created the universe as we know it. That’s what today’s recent science says.

Quran addresses this initial stage with a foundational verse of Surah Al-Anbiya :-

أُوَلَمْ يَرَ الَّذِينَ كَفَرُوا أَنَّ السَّمَاوَاتِ وَالْأَرْضَ كَانَتَا رَتْقًا فَفَتَقْنَاهُمَا ۖ وَجَعَلْنَا مِنَ الْمَاءِ كُلَّ شَيْءٍ حَيٍّ

Translation : Have those who disbelieved not considered that the heavens and the earth were a joined entity, and We separated/split them apart, and we created every living thing out of water.

To understand how this ayah which was revealed 1400 years ago aligns so perfectly with modern science, we will have to look closely at two core Arabic keywords used in this ayah: Rataq (رَتْق) and Fataq (فَتَقْ)

Subhanallah!

1.Rataq (رَتْق) :-

Linguistic Meaning: In classical Arabic, rataq means to be sewn together, fused, tightly closed, or completely homogenous. It describes an entity that is a single, undifferentiated mass with no gaps or seams

Scientific Parallel: This beautifully mirrors the cosmological concept of the singularity. Before the Big Bang, all matter, energy, space, and even time were compressed into an infinitely dense, infinitely hot, single point. The "heavens and the earth" (a Quranic idiom for the entire universe) were literally fused together as one.

2. Fataq (فَتَقْ) :-

Linguistic Meaning: The verb fataq is the exact opposite of rataq. It means to rip apart, unsew, split open, or burst forth. It implies breaking a tiny, closed entity open so that its contents expand outward.

Scientific Parallel: This corresponds directly to the cosmic expansion triggered by the Big Bang (t = 0). The singularity did not just explode into existing space; space itself ripped open and began expanding rapidly, separating matter and eventually allowing galaxies, stars, and planets (the heavens and the earth) to form over billions of years.

By combining these two words, the verse packs the entire concept of a singular, infinitely dense cosmic mass (Ratq) violently ripping open and expanding into the vast cosmos (Fataq) into just two words! It perfectly illuminates an audibly mirrors this very cosmic event, what a perfect example of deep eloquence (فصاحة) and rhetoric (بلاغة), and then a sudden change in context towards water and ultimately showing how every living thing is majorly made out of water is simply incomprehensible. This water related beauty itself requires an entire article so I won’t jump into it right now.

For now, Let’s dive in the beautiful eloquence and deep rhetoric Quran dignifies itself here, In classical Arabic rhetoric, the ayah starts with a weird phrase of interrogative of rebuke and wonder (I googled that translation) which in Arabic is called "إستفهام الإنكار” , It means a unique way of questioning, it did not address believers here, it specifically challenged the disbelievers, this shows how Quran in itself translated the future scientific discoveries to the exact level today’s atheists would question the origin of universe, those are the exact same disbelievers addressed in this ayah.

Allahu Akbar!

This is the beauty of our Quran, this very ayah which helped us understand just one event ie the initial stage of universe was so beautifully organized, woven like a complex tapestry which matched the level of understanding of the people 1400 years ago down to the level of understanding today, maintaining a flawless mathematical, rhetorical and spiritual symmetry despite being revealed orally over 23 years ago!
