Side Stepping Through Life

Do you ever feel like others seem to be able to stride through life, make forward movement with seemingly such ease, get the job, work up the ladder, get the next job, enjoy annual holidays, family BBQs, buy the house, get to select their favourite Farrow & Ball paint colour, build the pension pot, like a well choreographed life dance, generally walking forward through the traditional sense of life?

When you, on the other hand, seem to be having to side step continually, duck and dive, stand still, get stuck, step back three places, spin around, step out of time and side step som more.

Renting, moving, renting. Relationship skipping, life tripping. Take the job because you need to, not because it’s a strategic career move. Start a business, close a business, start another, close another. Get engaged, but not married. Take up a new hobby, ditch the hobby. Meet the person of your dreams, loose the person of your dreams.

Side step, slide to the left, criss-cross, slide to the right.

When is it your turn to stride to the front?

There is a time and place to stop, be still, take a side step and side step some more. This is the beautiful dance of life.

Some get to follow the moves with more ease, follow the crowd, move in time with the masses, dance with another, flamenco with fierce passion. Whereas others have to move in a more creative way, thinking on their feet, jumping, standing still, sliding, jiggling, creating the most unique, creative dance through life.

There might be times when you feel like you’re doing the headless chicken dance and quick-stepping out of time, off beat with others.

But I can guarantee, those that get to do the duck and dive, slide, trip, shuffle. Create the most interesting, unique dance of life.

Dancing to your own beat, tune and rhythm.

The waltz was not there at the beginning of time. Somewhere along the way someone said, hey, if we combine this move with this one and dance with this human at this pace together for a while, it creates this pattern. Like the jive, the quickstep and every other dance ever created.

To start, it was just a series of back and forth, going around in circles, until someone looked at it all in a different way and added some structure and flow.

Maybe one day the world will go, hey, this traditional life dance we have said is the one we should all try to follow, is actually not all that much fun, maybe the purpose was for things to be more free flowing, random and fun.

Maybe if you looked at your life moves in a different way, zoomed out and added a little flow, you would see how incredible, your unique dance of life really is.
