In the beginning of this song the narrator talks about how she stopped talking at the age of six, not due to a condition or anything but due to her personal choice. It seems pretty odd for a six year old to stop talking. It could be due to negligence provided by her parents or her surrounding. Over here “they” could be her parents.

It is often noticed that when a child stops talking the parents gets very worried about it and try to make the child speak in any or the other way ( by this time the damage has already been done ) . her saying that she was “happy being quiet” suggests that her silence became a form of comfort or a way for her to cope with what she was experiencing.

This part just says how the damage had already been done

It feels like the parents are trying to fix something emotional with external things. If the child became silent because of neglect/fear giving her everything she wants cannot simply undo that damage.

Okay here comes the most controversial part:

This part was banned by some radio stations in UK and US.

The line makes it sound like when someone feels hurt or believes something is unfair, they should either ignore their feelings or be told to do this.

This part says that the child’s silence was more than just refusing to speak. It was a way of showing that something was wrong.

It shows that the situation was more complicated than it first appeared.

The child was misunderstood by the school which lead to her being expelled. The school failed to understand the child. They treated her as a problem rather than trying to understand her.

But she didn’t really care about it.

This part shows the child becoming overwhelmed and unable to respond normally. The psychiatrist tries to communicate with her, but she reacts suddenly showing how difficult it was for to express what she was feeling.

The christmas scene creates a contrast between the decorations around her and what she may be experiencing inside.

Even though her parents welcomed her with love, they still had problems between them. Their constant fighting may have affected the child because their attention was focused on their own conflicts.

This could have caused her to feel neglected.

The ending shows how hopeless the child feels. It reflects the emotional struggles she has faced throughout and how she sees life as unfair because she feels misunderstood and unsupported.

My thoughts:
This song also shows how important it is for parents to focus on their child’s emotional needs.

When parents are too focused on their own problems/conflicts the child feels ignored and unsupported. This can affect the child’s behaviour and how they deal with their emotions.
