There is something extra special about blueberries on a summer morning.
It may be their color against a pale bowl, or the way they tumble across the counter when your attention is elsewhere. Or maybe it’s because they seem made for breakfast: a handful stirred into oats, a spoonful over yogurt, a breakfast smoothie, folded into muffins, or enjoyed, one by one, as the coffee brews.
Ordinary summer mornings, the quiet ones before the day fully begins, are moments to treasure. Moments that will soon slip away as August becomes September before we know it.
August feels abundant, at first. The markets are overflowing with the season’s best berries, peaches, plums, cherries, and more. The days are still long, and it seems as though summer will last until everything we meant to do is finished.
There will be another picnic.
Another evening on the porch.
Another bowl of berries waiting to become something special.
And then, with little warning, the light begins to change.
This week, I’ve been baking blueberry danishes.
They’re the kind of pastry you may choose from a bakery case: soft, golden dough with a creamy center, and blueberry filling finished with a hint of the warm spices we’ll soon begin to crave.
They feel special, but not overly so. Just enough to turn an ordinary breakfast into something worth lingering over.
That’s what I love about morning bakes. They are rarely elaborate, but often sweetly delicious. A warm scone, a slice of freshly baked blueberry bread, a wedge of a blueberry Dutch Baby pancake, or a homemade pastry can change the rhythm of a summer day.
The aroma fills the kitchen.
The coffee seems to last longer.
Someone wanders in (a family member or even a neighbor) to ask what’s baking.
For just a moment in time, no one rushes quite so quickly.
Those are happy mornings.
The new blueberry danishes will be on 31Daily tomorrow. They’re made with a soft, lightly sweetened dough, a cream cheese filling, and plenty of blueberries.
Every season seems to have at least one food I don’t want to miss.
In spring, it’s the first asparagus spear transformed into a savory tart, or a strawberry dessert the family craves.
In autumn, it’s often the first apple cake, fragrant with cinnamon.
In summer, it’s always blueberries.
There isn’t a particular blueberry recipe that marks the season in my house. It’s a collection of a dozen recipes. From muffins and muffin bread to pies, crisps, and wholesome recipes like smoothies, salads, and even trail mix.
Together, they taste like summer.
Should you find yourself with an extra pint of blueberries this week, here are 5 easy ways to enjoy them:
Tender, buttery, and especially lovely with a lemon-infused glaze. Enjoy with morning coffee or afternoon tea.
Everything we love about a blueberry muffin baked into a simple, sliceable loaf.
A cozy, wholesome make ahead breakfast that’s naturally sweetened and filled with juicy berries.
A quick and easy oven pancake with lofty puffs, crispy edges, and a tender center.
For mornings or evenings when you want something sweet without waiting for the oven (with or without ice cream, of course).
Here’s to lingering over summer breakfasts and enjoying
every
last
moment.
Happy August, dear friend!
